Clusterfuck in one of my FF leagues....opinions?

I'm guessing we will have a variety of opinions.

It's a 12 team league. Mostly co-workers....some friends of co-workers. (For now I'll leave $ value out of it because IMO it's relative....some ppl will sweat a $20 league, some won't sweat a $1,000 league)

I'm the commissioner. This is the first year. Site is Yahoo and waivers are a 1 day period.

I get an email one day, someone told me he dropped DeAngello Williams by mistake. He said he doesn't know if I can reverse it, but if I can he would appreciate it. He meant to drop David Cobb.

I looked it up. This guy is in 9th place of a 12 team league. Technically not out of it but realistically done. It looks like he waited til all the waivers went through (he had 3 waivers that processed. I think one was kicker, one defense, and one was to pickup David Cobb). He then picked up Crockett Gilmore off Free Agency and dropped DeAngello Williams.

Looking at his team, there is no way he wanted to drop DeAngello (in any angle shoot). His RBs are Matt Forte, DeAngello, Jonathan Stewart, and CJ Anderson.

I asked 3 or 4 people in the office what they thought. Everyone wanted to pick him up off waivers but said it was an honestly mistake and since it was a "Friendly" league to let him reverse it.

What I did was drop Cobb and give him Williams...told him not to do it again.


next day, message board lights up with complaints about the transaction. It looks like the guy complaining was #1 in waivers and the other 1-2 guys complaining are the guys he works with the most. I tried to explain my side but they said it looked like I was cheating and they are pretty much protesting.

FWIW, i don't even know the guy who i made the correction for. He is the brother in law of a co-worker.

You did the right thing. DeAngelo Williams is probably a top 5 fantasy RB with LeVeon Bell out for the season. Nobody would drop him intentionally, the guys who were complaining only have their own interests at heart and not what's the right thing to do. You don't gift another team a championship because someone accidently made a mistake.

It's only the right call if he asked you to do it. If you did it without confirming it with him, you were in the wrong.

The outcome of this league should be decided based on an even & fair Head to Head ability of Team Owners to mold the team that takes home the money based upon their own skill and not upon a mistake. Team Owners, if they will look at this situation objectively and appreciate the effect that the error in question would very probably have on the eventual outcome of this league, will agree that the right decision was made in the interest of maintaining that level and Fair playing field.

Express something like that, at this point. Its not unlikely at all that this league gets decided by 2 points separating the the Team that takes home the $$$ and the team(s) that fall just short. You want that 2 point difference being the result of Fair Play and not the pickup of a guy that should not have been on The Wire in the first place, a guy that got on The Wire as result of an error.

Team owners should appreciate this and if they do not they are not considering the Big Picture & the fact that you made the decision that you did in THEIR interests...the bests interests of the League on the whole & Fair Play for all. So as to remove the possibility that should they miss cashing by that 2 points, that oh so close of a loss, that they did not suffer that loss as result of a guy getting a player Mid-Season that should not have been available.

Standard operating procedure when someone makes a drop by mistake is for the commissioner to fix it

those people are being shitty. It was an honest mistake, there's no reason that #1 in waivers deserves to reap the reward of that. if anything the rest of the league should be pissed at you for letting that drop happen if #1 is still in contention as I would assume its collusion

You did the right thing letting him getting back Williams but see if you can put blocks in to keep this from happening again.I used to run a work league and this is the first year that Im not playing in or running a league since 1997 and I dont miss it one bit.

So you feel that the best route would be to have the League decided based upon this mistake?

Instead of Fair Head to Head Skill?

You wouldn't complain about losing by 2 points at year's end if that loss was due to this mistake and you'd have won if not for this mistake?

The best route is to follow the rules in every situation. I don't care who wins as long as the rules are followed. If I made a mistake like that I would not even ask for someone to "please fix my mistake" because I would assume that whoever is running the pool would say "sorry no way".

Man that is a cluster, i agree with everyone but watch out, it's a slippery slope. Next thing you know, you are going to get emails stating a guy accidentally played the wrong guy, he made the changes but never hit submit. You will always have (at least) 1 who complains on any issue. Just be fair and consistent.

I think you made the right call but people will be bunch of bitches. If anything you can always have the league just vote on it so the onus wont fall on you

I think my biggest mistake was not posting about it when I made the move.

I guess I could've let everyone vote on it but I didn't want to wait too long as the waiver period is only 1 day.

True, and not only do I respect your opinion on this matter it was actually my own opinion immediately after reading the question. That if a player is placed on waiver wire he is there, thats it end of discussion. I further justified this opinion by considering that results (individual player's production thus Team Scores) are so much based upon "The Bounce of The Ball" if you will, mistakes more precisely.

For example: Ref makes a bogus Offensive Pass Interference call and wipes out a 44 yd. TD. Mistake. A team owner makes a STUPID Trade along the way (there is found to be no collusion, the Team Owner just made a stupid deal). Mistake.

Initially your opinion on the matter was my own. I then considered the value of preserving the integrity of competition within the league, maintaining a level playing field and having the eventual result of the league (which team takes home the $$$) be decided NOT upon this particular mistake and came to the conclusion that this was more valuable an outcome than that of adhering steadfastly to the written letter of the rules.

I think if you weight the 2 things against one another you might reach the same conclusion.

More is gained by preserving the integrity, the fairness of the league than would be gained by allowing this one team to gain an advantage as result of a mistake.
