The Minnesota Timberwolves have reached an agreement in principle to send All-Star forward Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett and a protected 2015 first-round draft pick, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Cleveland is making the deal with Minnesota with a firm agreement Love will opt out of his contract in 2015 and re-sign with the Cavaliers on a five-year, $120 million-plus contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The deal cannot be finalized until Aug. 23, because Wiggins, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, cannot be traded until one month after the signing of his rookie contract. The two teams have agreed to the deal, but neither would have recourse if the other decided to pull out of the arrangement before it can be formally completed this month. No third team is involved in the Cavaliers-Timberwolves trade agreement.

power move

I said I would've liked to see them keep Wiggins and just try to sign Love as a FA outright after next year but that is easy to say in practice when you aren't the one taking the risk. When you got a chance to get Love then most likely you gotta just lock it up.

Kyrie/Love has some glaring defensive deficiencies but offensively they're gonna be sick

Should be dominant.

Do they still have to do something with the money?

Sources have told ESPN.com that Love has been highly intrigued by the idea of playing alongside Olympic teammate LeBron James on a full-time basis and is not put off by the fact that James' new contract with the Cavs spans only two seasons and includes a player option to return to free agency next summer.
NBA Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas reacted to news of the trade agreement on Twitter by crediting James for his influence in getting Love to Cleveland.
Lebron James best executive in the NBA!!!

'Love' it.... Lebron & Cavs just got one of, if not the league's best rebounder, as well as one of the best shooters/scorers.

Only problem is that now we're back to square one again, where all of this talent is being compiled around Lebron & there will always be those question marks...

yeah I know what you mean, unless he can win with 4 RXers I'm pretty much not gonna be impressed.

Defense wins championships, and with the exception of Lebron there are no defensive stalwarts on this team. I think Chicago is better

It's exciting to get Love and I guess just too much for the Cavs to turn down.

But man are they giving up a lot. Love would have been a free agent after this season right?

the patient approach would be to play this year as is (still solid team with Lebron and company) and then try and sign Love after this coming season. Then you would still have Lebron, Irving, Love, Wiggins, Bennett and your 2015 first round pick.

Admittedly, there is a chance you wouldn't get Love as he could've gone elsewhere or agreed to a long term deal in a trade with another team. But then the Cavs still could've signed another max contract type player.

Bennett, Wiggins and a first round pick (albeit, surely a low first rounder) just seems a lot to give up for essentially one year because you could have it all if just a bit more patient.

Risk/reward I guess. Cavs felt like they had to move now.

Fwiw the only way they could've signed Love after this year would've been to not re-sign Thompson, Varejao and trade Bennett and Waiters.

Basically just have Kyrie/LeBron/Love/Wiggins

Obviously we won't know the contract details for a bit since the deal can't be consumated for another few weeks but I'm sure he'll have an opt out after year 2 or 3 so that he can either A. get a new deal when the TV $ goes up B. jet cleveland once he finds out LeBron's true goal of becoming a 180 pound vegan

Gotcha. That makes a little more sense.

The Cavs are giving up a lot here for a player who really hasn't done much in the NBA.

No playoff appearances, hasn't played on a team above .500, hasn't played in 82 games in any season.

Guys isn't Rebounding considered part of playing defense???

Cavs will have one of the best rebounders in the league if it happens.

And nobody wins in Minnesota... Just ask Kevin Garnett
