Clemens is starting todays game with only 3 days rest. I can understand the theory that you can't worry about your starting playoff rotation until you are actually in the playoffs. However, the other side of the coin is that the goal is to win the World Series, not just make it to the playoffs. I would not pitch Clemens today and here are my reasons.
1. Clemens is my Ace and I need him to open the playoffs at Atlanta and the odds are in my favor that Clemens is not needed for the Astros to advance anyway. Why do I say this ?
a. The Astros are the hottest team in Baseball right now, they are at home, they have a very good home record while rockies have always been pathetic on the road, the Rockies are playing terrible right now with a 2-8 record.
2. The Astros are not even in a do or die situation because even if they lose, the Giants still have to win their game today. On paper you would assume that the giants starting their Ace Jason Schmidt makes them almost a sure thing, but that isn't really the case. Schmidt hasn't been pitching very good at all lately and the Giants have lost 5 of Schmidt's last 7 starts and even though He won his last start, He gave up 4 earned runs in only 6 innings.
3. If the Astros lose and Giants win, Roger Clemens could then start playoff game on Monday with an extra days rest and with Giants unable to use either Schmidt or Tomko.
I have the Astros at 50/1 for Pennant and 100/1 for World series and I feel saving clemens to open the playoffs is the best chance for Astros to advance. :discuss:
