US Air Strikes, Taliban Bombings Responsible for Most Killings

by Jason Ditz, July 31, 2009

As the eight-year long Afghanistan War continues to escalate, civilians are increasingly bearing the brunt of the attacks from both sides. A United Nations report today says that at least 1,013 civilians were killed in the first half of 2009, a 24% increase from the same period in 2008.

The Taliban and its affiliates were responsible for somewhat more than half of the deaths, principally as a result of bombings in residential areas. And while the international forces are credited in the report for giving “high priority” to avoid civilian deaths, they were responsible for at least 310. The bulk of the civilian deaths from the international side have come from air strikes by the United States, including a single series of strikes in the Farah Province in early May which killed 140 civilians. The US sought to blame the Taliban for those deaths as well, but unsuccessfully.

Ultimately the UN urged both sides to make efforts to reduce the number of civilians they kill. The US has been constantly changing its rules of engagement to try to reduce such killings, and earlier this week it was revealed that the Taliban had issued a new booklet ordering forces loyal to the insurgencies to limit their attacks on civilian-heavy targets. So far, however, the attempts by both sides have been fruitless and have been little more than the background noise in between reports of massive civilian deaths in their respective attacks.

When the fighting is escalated all deaths, both sides and civilian will be escalated.

Not trying to sound unsympathetic but that is a fact of life. I Dont think anyone is not trying to prevent civilian deaths but I would say that the Taliban are the ones headquartering and billeting in very close proximity of civilians.

What exactly is US trying to accomplish there at this point?

They will not eradicate the Taliban completely and they dont have enough troops there to accomplish much.

Either pretty much colonialize the place or get out

The war on terror wont be won with weapons

As proposed there will be over 60,000 troops there soon.

I have extremely mixed emotions.

In my 1st post I meant that I did not believe that anyone was trying to cause civilian deaths.

Where are all the leftys who were screaming for "exit strategies" or "timelines"? I have heard neither from the current administratin. Also if the "surge" in Iraq was such a colossal failure as leftys claimed, why are they now in favor of a similar strategy?

Iraq will be a calamity by Spring......

The Afghan War cannot be "won"....ask the soviets, it is impossible to drive out the taliban cus the whole country is the taliban and there is no way to overcome their home court advantage....
Worse yet the U.S. govt knows this. They want the troops bogged down over there...they will send more just so they can be stranded there also.....You really cant be thinking that Obama wants to defeat Islamic terrorists can you?
No they are trying to do 2 things now in the NEW WAR of hope and change. #1....Bring the islamic world under control of the World Govt. Unless they can cripple its male population they will never get the general pop to submit....
#2....Destroy and humilate the U.S. military so as to diminish its power in the world as well. You will never hear Obama say anything about winning, leaving or defeating the enemy in Afghanistan. He's the Pete Rose of politics.....Coaching the team he's betting against.....

If this happened in the US someone would be labeled a racist. If we kill them all we won't have to go back in 10 years to fix the problem.
