Lombardi expects Johnson to "dig in" with regard to his contract stance, targeting a monster deal for a running back. It's worth noting that NFL Network's Jason La Canfora and the Nashville Tennessean reported similar things in June, so the story is legit. The Titans could potentially use an Adrian Peterson extension as a jump-off point for negotiations. Johnson is known to be in search of a "history" deal. His current salary is a measly $800,000.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Unlike DeSean Jackson, Johnson has two years left on his contract. Therefore, today's deadline to accrue a year of service means little to him. The Titans are taking a hard-line approach of not negotiating with CJ2K until he at least shows up at the facility -- they haven't even made an offer yet. There doesn't appear to be a quick resolution coming here.

Johnson's agent was the first person Reinfeldt called when the lockout was lifted, and the sides have already discussed the parameters of a new deal. Reinfeldt reiterated, however, that CJ2K must show up to training camp to finalize the extension. The Titans want him in as soon as possible to pick up Chris Palmer's new offense. It remains to be seen if the Titans' offer meets Johnson's "history-making" expectations.

"I'm not gonna make any offer with the way he's acting," said Adams. "Life's too short." Asked about the possibility of the standoff lasting into the regular season, Adams replied: "That could be, but that's his decision. He's got to make that. I'm not going to interfere. If he doesn't want to come in and play, then he doesn't want to come in and play." Though we're embarking on a critical week for talks, both sides are digging in their heels. If they're still without progress next week, we'll have to consider moving Johnson down the Draft Guide rankings.

"To see which way we are going," tweeted Johnson. "Could get better or wors(e)." Profootballtalk expected contract talks to heat up this week, and this is the first positive sign since training camp opened. The Titans have insisted that no offer would be forthcoming until Johnson reports whereas CJ2K has wanted a contract offer as a good-faith measure. He's meeting them more than half-way with a face-to-face discussion. Let's see if they can close the gap this week.

An immediate deal was never likely, as the sides remain "far apart," confirms Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean. "I'm not sure there was any progress made," acknowledged GM Mike Reinfeldt. "But I do think it was beneficial to meet." Added Wyatt, "The stalemate is expected to continue for at least the near future." ESPN's Adam Schefter recently suggested there was a "real chance" Johnson would miss Week 1, and possibly more. He's a risky fantasy pick at the top of round one, though owners drafting Nos. 5-8 overall should be willing to pounce on the value.

Johnson's meeting with the Titans in Tennessee Wednesday ended without much progress. "I feel like I came in and they gave me their points and we gave them our points and we are not seeing eye-to-eye right now," Johnson said. Joel Segal, CJ2K's agent, said he expects to talk to the Titans again in the next day or so. Despite the negativity, we aren't in last-minute stages yet. A deal could very well get done around Labor Day, making CJ2K a steal in the middle of Round 1.

The two sides are continuing negotiations Tuesday, and La Canfora believes the framework of a deal could be done in time to get Johnson ready to "practice and play in Week 1." Nothing is certain, and continued disagreement over CJ2K's value is still possible, but La Canfora obviously got the positive vibe from one or both sides. Our suspicion has been that Johnson will have a deal in place a week before the start of the season, which would be this weekend. We have no qualms about taking on the risk with CJ2K in the middle of the first round.

I have been impressed with both Ringer and Harper in preseason. I'm sure the Titans are as well. Don't get me wrong, there is only one CJ, but it will be interesting to see the contract talks play out.

Don't look for him to be uniform Thursday night. CJ2K is not playing in New Orleans for the preseason finale.

Javon Ringer (hip) has practiced two straight days and will be No. 2 on the depth chart. Jamie Harper is No. 3.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>The Titans will give Johnson work "based on how he feels and how his body responds to playing in a game less than two weeks after rejoining the team." Given the massive investment the team has made in Johnson, we imagine the coaching staff will be extra cautious easing him back. That being said, this doesn't seem to be an issue that will linger into the season. Johnson is a must-start Week 1, and should be back to full playing shape in the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, he'll have to deal with the Baltimore run defense on Sunday.

"Don't be surprised if he handles it 25 to 30 times against the Ravens," Keith said. Coach Mike Munchak stated as much Wednesday, suggesting Johnson could touch the ball 25 times as the Titans attempt to do what the Jags did to them last week. As Rotoworld's Evan Silva points out, CJ2K will be a prime buy-low candidate even if he disappoints again versus the Ravens. The Titans play the Broncos and Browns in Weeks 3 and 4.
