Chicago Sees Coldest July In 67 Years

Average Temperature Only 68.9 Degrees

Have you left your air conditioner in the closet this summer, and worn long pants more often than shorts? If so, you may not be surprised to find out that Chicago is seeing its coldest July in more than 65 years.

The National Weather Service says 2009 has seen the coldest July since the official recording station was moved away from the lakefront in 1942. The average temperature this month in Chicago has been a mere 68.9 degrees.

Even in the years before 1942, when the National Weather Service recorded temperatures at the cooler lakefront, there are only three years that had colder Julys through the 26th.

There have also been far more days than usual with high temperatures less than 80 degrees this year. In 2009, there were 13 days where the temperature did not exceed 80 degrees. Only three Julys in the past 67 years have had more days in Chicago with highs less than 80 – there were 18 such days in 1992, and 14 in 1996 and 2000.

We have also failed to reach 90 degrees at any time this month.

But the good news is that homeowners this summer have been seeing a big break on their electric bills. Air conditioning usage, according to ComEd earlier this month, is way down from last year and has saved residents an average of $50 since June, compared with last year.

In addition to the mild weather, Com Ed's cost of power was also down 9 percent as of July 17, a savings passed on to you. Your natural gas price has been down even more, 27 percent. Peoples Gas and North Shore Gas estimate a typical home customer will pay $500 less this year than last year.

All Time Hottest Temps in Portland, must be global cooling - ROFL

http://www.nwcn.com/statenews/oregon/stories/NW_072909WXB-heat-wave-oregon-LJ.8abbac08.html

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Temperature records fell up and down the Willamette Valley as a heat wave continued to grip much of Oregon.

Portland broke another heat record Tuesday, recording a temperature of 106 at the airport. Vancouver also set a record at 106 degrees. Salem reached 107 degrees, Eugene hit 106 and Medford was a toasty 108 degrees.

Wednesday was expected to bring a third straight record-breaking high temperature. KGW Chief Meteorologist Matt Zaffino said the Portland area would likely flirt with the all-time high temperature ever recorded, which is 107 degrees.

An excessive heat warning remains in effect from the National Weather Service for Oregon and western Washington as forecasters predicted the hottest weather of the year.

It's El Nino...not global warming. :103631605

I did a quick look at July all time record highs in Portland and found that the all time July high was 107 back in 1965 (another building El Nino year) and 1942. I don't think we get that hot, but it is interesting to note that of the top 10 all time July highs in Portland, 6 of the dates occurred in building El Nino years, so this isn't that unexpected.

:ohno: Global warming has been proven. It's kind of like saying "my grass is brown, so much for all those green grass theories".

Actually those who don't buy into the recent global warming hysteria
don't deny that there are temperature cycles.

We just don't believe that our driving habits have anything to do with it.

Or for that matter, what ply toilet paper we use.

:ohno:

Americans may be using less toilet paper, if Sheryl Crow has her way.
The singer, who is crossing the country on a biodiesel bus with producer Laurie David, proposes limiting toilet paper use as one solution to global warming, according to a Washington Post report.
"I have spent the better part of this tour trying to come up with easy ways for us all to become a part of the solution to global warming," she wrote April 19 on the Biodiesel Bus blog, according to a report by the Washington Post. "Although my ideas are in the earliest stages of development, they are, in my mind, worth investigating."
Her toilet paper manifesto would limit how many squares of toilet paper Americans use in a sitting.

All the people saying "there is no global warming" and those saying "nothing we did is causing global warming", sound one whole hell of a lot like the tobacco companies back in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

I'm not going to read the studies. Whether it exists or not and whether it's man-made are two things I can do nothing about. Plus I know top scientists disagree. So why argue about it?

I'm happy I can read the stats on Covers and know how to clear my cache and cookies. That's as technical as I choose to get with science and statistics.

All the people saying the sky is falling because of global warming sound one hell of a lot like the people in 1970 predicting famine in America by 2000 if population wasn't controlled.

They have the same math skills.
