Ok so you don't know what homophobe means. Being homophobic does not mean you are afraid of gay people. It means you are afraid of your own latent tendencies. I think your still missing the fact that saying someone is homophobic does not mean they are afraid of gays.
It's a subconscious fear of latent tendcies. Lying in the subconscious mind the person does not detect it as a fear, nor does he/she recognize the repressed latent tendencies. The end result is the dislike you mention or even worse the hate that leads to violence.
