Charcoal all day long....but it's not as convenient (obviously). You have to prepare for charcoal. I have both grills and use charcoal when I'm not being lazy or in a hurry (so I tend to use the gas grill more often!)
Anyone who comes in here and says gas probably doesn't actually have 2 functional testicles.
Charcoal in a landslide. Some things in life are worth taking a little extra time to do right. Grilling (and food preparation in general) is one of those things.
If you are interested in getting a good maillard reaction on your beef, gas grills cook much hotter. There's a reason why you see the best steak houses cooking with gas. Higher temps.
It all depends on where you putting it. If you have a small balcony or little deck then gotta go gas. If you have a huge backyard patio charcoal is pretty amazing. All that said you can get lots of grills that do both now and have integrated smokers if you wanna spend some dinero.
I can make anything as good on a webber kettle as any over priced grill. That's my go to. I've even smoked pork butts and chuck roasts on it. Something like the green egg would be way easier to work with for low and slow.

If you plan to use your BBQ to make dinner a few nights a week; gas it is.
If you plan on BBQ a few times a summer for a family party then go charcoal.
