Cardinals’ Warner Can Add $4 Million in Bonuses With NFL Title
Email | Print | A A A

By Curtis Eichelberger and Aaron Kuriloff
Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner may earn as much as $4 million in bonuses, doubling his base salary, if he leads his team to its first Super Bowl championship, according to a person with access to his contract.
Warner, a two-time National Football League most valuable player who becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, earned $1.5 million in performance bonuses during the regular season and $1.5 million for leading the Cardinals to the NFC championship game this weekend against the Philadelphia Eagles in Glendale, Arizona.
The 37-year-old quarterback, who won a Super Bowl title with the St. Louis Rams after the 1999 season, can increase his bonus total by $500,000 if the team advances to the Super Bowl Feb. 1 in Tampa, Florida, and another $500,000 if Arizona wins the championship. The total bonus payout for the season would be $4 million for a player who might have wound up as a backup.
“We weren’t sure what his role was going to be,” Mark Bartelstein, Warner’s agent, said in a telephone interview discussing his client’s contract.
He wouldn’t confirm the bonus figures. The person who provided them asked for anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the matter.
The Cardinals were 2 1/2-point underdogs to the Eagles with Las Vegas odddsmakers. In the American Football Conference championship game to determine the other Super Bowl team, the Pittsburgh Steelers were six-point favorites over the Baltimore Ravens.
Three-Year Contract
The Cardinals signed Warner to a three-year contract following the 2005 season, and has a base salary of $4 million this season. The team in 2006 signed first-round draft choice Matt Leinart to a six-year deal that ESPN.com said was worth a maximum of $50.8 million.
Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton didn’t return a telephone call seeking comment.
Andrew Brandt, former vice president and general counsel of the Green Bay Packers, said bonus-laden contracts happen most often with players returning from injury, or with those whose previous success is countered by other factors, such as advancing age.
“That’s a situation where they obviously have an extremely high-paid young player and Warner was signed when it looked like they were turning the franchise over to Leinart,” Brandt, who now teaches at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Georgetown University Law School, said in a telephone interview. “If you’re representing Kurt Warner, you want to make sure that if he does become the starter, he’s adequately compensated.”
Flacco’s Bonus
The Ravens are led by rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. A first-round draft choice, Flacco stands to add up to $1.55 million to his 2009 base paycheck of $1.54 million from success this season, the person said.
Flacco, 24, already has triggered incentives this season that increased his base salary by $750,000 in each of the four remaining years of his contract. His rookie base salary was $295,000.
In addition, the Ravens’ 27-9 first-round win over the Miami Dolphins and 13-10 second-round win over the Tennessee Titans this month boosted Flacco’s base pay in 2009 by another $400,000. At $200,000 per victory, that amount would be doubled if Baltimore wins this weekend against the Steelers at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field and goes on to take the Super Bowl.
‘Honors Bonus’
“With Flacco, it’s become standard for first-rounders to have a nice honors bonus package built in,” Brandt said.
Flacco’s agent Joseph Linta didn’t return a phone call to his office in Branford, Connecticut. Ravens spokesman Chad Steele declined to comment.
The other quarterbacks playing in this weekend’s conference championships, Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb, have no playoff bonuses in their contracts, according to the person.
Brandt said that during his days with the Packers, the team avoided performance bonuses because they encourage players to worry about their statistics instead of the team’s success. McNabb and Roethlisberger, he said, already have contracts worth about $100 million.
“When you get to that level of contract, you’re not putting in a Super Bowl bonus -- we never did with Brett Favre,” Brandt said. “You’re expecting the highest level of performance and that’s being compensated already.
