TAMPA – After setting ESPN viewing records in 2007, the University of South Florida football program will again be a favorite of the worldwide leader in sports in 2008.

The 2008 schedule was announced by the BIG EAST on Monday afternoon and it is highlighted by four nationally televised games on ESPN or ESPN2. The television coverage of the remaining games will be announced at a later date.

“We are pleased with the spotlight that ESPN and the BIG EAST have presented to our program,” said USF athletic director Doug Woolard. “USF is on the rise and ESPN recognizes that we are an attractive team to college football viewers across the country. It appears the 2008 season is something the entire community of Tampa Bay will be excited about. We have a challenging home schedule for our fans, a wealth of national exposure and great opportunity to continue the growth of the USF brand.” ​

The 2008 season opener is against Tennessee-Martin at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 30. It will be the first meeting between the programs.<o></o>
USF’s second game of the season at UCF will be showcased by ESPN to a national audience on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. The Friday night format was good to the Bulls in 2007, when a record crowd of 67,012 watched as <st1:City w:st="on"><st1lace w:st="on">Tampa</st1lace></st1:City>’s hometown team defeated No. 5 West Virginia, 21-13, at Ray Jay. Jim Leavitt’s program owns a 3-0 all-time record against UCF, including a 64-12 win in 2007. <o></o>

There are much better plays out there than USF...For one thing you never want to play the over 9 on a team who has to play 6 road games on the season. I also don't like the idea that they have to go on the road in late October and play Louisville, and turn right around and have to play Cincinnati on the road just 5 days later. Then a warm weather USF team has to travel to WV and play on what will probably be a cold December day in Morgantown. USF probably has a talented enough team to win 10 or 11 games...But their schedule may not allow it..

This isn't really a tough schedule and their three OOC road games are against a bottom 5 team in all of I-A (FIU), the 2nd worst team in the ACC (NCSU), and a UCF team that is going to have bigtime problems this year. Louisville is an absolute mess as well. Cincy has by far the best chance to knock them off before going to Morgantown but I don't think even Cincy can get it done.

USF victory impresses nobody

<HR noShade SIZE=1>MIAMI — For the past two years, Florida International has been generally regarded as the worst team in Division I-A football, losing 25 of 26 games entering Saturday's game with No. 12 USF.
The Bulls, 28-point favorites coming in, were almost as bad Saturday night, struggling near the goal line and giving up another fourth-quarter collapse that had the Panthers attempting an onside kick in the final minute. The Bulls hung on for a 17-9 win, but coach Jim Leavitt wasn't excited about much.
"We played about as bad as we can play. I really don't see how we could play worse," Leavitt said. "We won a ballgame, but we're not real happy about it. It was pretty disgusting. … We made every mistake you could possibly make."
After seeing 14-point fourth-quarter leads disappear in wins against Central Florida and Kansas, the Bulls nearly did it again. Leading 17-0 with three minutes to play, USF allowed a punt to be downed on the 2-yard line, and after two false starts, saw running back Mike Ford tackled in the end zone for a safety.
The defense, having held FIU to 79 yards in three scoreless quarters, then gave up a 61-yard pass to the 2-yard line, setting up Julian Reams' 1-yard touchdown run with 53 seconds left. FIU's onside kick was recovered by Nate Allen to thwart the rally.
"We just messed around, the whole game," Leavitt said. "There's no excuses. If we want to be a real good team, we need to find a way to change. … To play a team like this and not just move through it, it's embarrassing, to be honest with you."
The scoreboard was never as frightening as what USF faced in the third quarter, when linebacker Brouce Mompremier collided with a teammate and lay motionless at midfield.
After several minutes, he was taken off the field in an ambulance and taken by helicopter to a local hospital, where he was in stable condition, with full movement in his arms and legs.
On a night when FIU's fans didn't have much to cheer about, awkwardly half-filling FIU Stadium for its grand opening, they found a certain joy in having given the Bulls a scare.
"Overrated," the fans chanted, and USF's players said they have to play better to earn their national ranking.
"We moved the ball well all night, but when we got into the red zone where it mattered, we couldn't punch it in," said Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe, who went 14-for-22 for 136 yards after back-to-back 300-yard efforts in his previous two games. "I thought we were (ready), but apparently not."
USF's offense got just 10 points from its first four trips inside the FIU 10-yard line, with a field goal blocked and Grothe stopped on fourth down from the 1.
"A lot of the mistakes we made were self-inflicted wounds," offensive tackle Ryan Schmidt said. "We were inside the 10-yard line (four) times and only scored twice, one a field goal? That's just not acceptable for us. We're much better than that. We didn't even get it from the 1-foot line. We got stopped. We've got four senior guys (on the line) so that's not what we're looking for."
In the first half, USF outgained FIU 216-40, but the Panthers outgained the Bulls 149-102 in the second half. The Bulls' defense, while stingy, forced just one turnover, giving them three takeaways in four games, among the fewest in the nation.
So while the Bulls are pleased to be 4-0, there's little else to be pleased about, especially with a road trip ahead to North Carolina State, which upset No. 15 East Carolina in overtime Saturday afternoon.
"It's a wake-up call," Schmidt said. "It's a good thing we got a W, but it's not something we want to do every week."

5-Game 'Preseason' Has Ended For The Undefeated Bulls

TAMPA - Undefeated at 5-0? Ho-hum.
Ranked No. 10 nationally? Yawn.
Tied for the best start in school history? Zzzzzz.
The University of South Florida couldn't have gotten off to a better start.
But it means absolutely nothing to the Bulls.
"Basically, our first five games were the preseason," quarterback Matt Grothe said.
The real season - USF's Big East Conference schedule - starts tonight at 7:30 at home against Pittsburgh (3-1, 1-0).
"We went unscathed through the nonconference schedule, but we did that last year," USF senior long snapper Eric Setser said. "We're trying to improve on our Big East record. That's really all that matters to us."
This is the Bulls' fourth season in the Big East. They've never finished better - or worse - in league play than 4-3. A winning record in the Big East isn't good enough anymore. The goal is simple: a Big East championship.
"This is what our summer workouts have been geared for, the Big East," wide receiver Jessie Hester said. "This is what we need the most."
The Bulls couldn't have asked for a bigger stage to begin their Big East title quest. A Raymond James Stadium crowd of 50,000 is expected for the Bulls' first Thursday night ESPN home game and only second Thursday night ESPN game. The highly coveted Thursday night time slot is usually the only college game on television.
"It's nice to know you have all the eyes watching you," Hester said. "It's good to have a Thursday game; everyone has to watch it."
Well, not everyone.
Three other games will be televised tonight, but none featuring Chris Fowler, Craig James and Jesse Palmer in the booth or sideline reporter Erin Andrews.
"My old high school coach called me this week and was all excited: 'You get to see Erin Andrews,'" USF senior safety Danny Verpaele said.
The Bulls, however, will be focused on Pittsburgh running back LeSean McCoy, who is the Big East's fourth-leading rusher, averaging 97 yards per game. Last year, USF held him to a career-low 55 yards.
"He's probably the best pure runner in the Big East," USF secondary coach Troy Douglas said. "When you talk about the running back that has the best NFL career ahead of him in the Big East, it will be this guy."
Senior linebacker Tyrone McKenzie said the defense has a tough challenge.
"He's elusive and has the speed to get outside," McKenzie said. "If you don't swarm to the ball, he has a chance to break it every time."
While the Bulls are 0-1 on ESPN Thursday night games, the Panthers have lost eight of their last nine ESPN Thursday night contests.
"You get pumped for this, because everyone will be watching," McKenzie said. "Everyone loves football. Football will be on tonight. So everyone better tune in."

<HR>At Stake
Since the rest of the league (except UConn) has at least one bad loss, the Bulls have been anointed the Big East's "team to beat." USF would only solidify that status as the league's top team with a win tonight. However, a Pitt upset would only provide more ammunition for critics that the Big East is a bad conference.
Keep On Eye On
USF - For the second consecutive week, the defense will be shorthanded. The Bulls likely will be without three starters - DE George Selvie, NT Terrell McClain and LB Brouce Mompremier - so DE Craig Marshall, NT Sampson Genus and LB Chris Robinson need to step up.
Pitt - RB LeSean "Shady" McCoy is coming off a 149-yard rushing day at Syracuse last week. It was his eighth career 100-yard rushing game for the sophomore, but he'd rather forget last year's game against USF, when the Bulls held him to a career-low 55 yards.
Key Matchup
USF's defense against Pitt's running game. In the Bulls' four I-A wins, the defense feasted on three of the nation's nine worst offenses. Pitt isn't an offensive juggernaut, but the Panthers possess the most balanced attack the Bulls have seen this season, which could present some unique challenges.

USF - DE George Selvie (ankle), NT Terrell McClain (ankle), LB Brouce Mompremier (neck), CB/PR Theo Wilson (knee) and RG Mark Hermann (foot) are out; K Justin Teachey (thigh) is doubtful.

The junior quarterback threw three touchdown passes and ran for another and no. 19 south florida topped syracuse 45-13 on saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t his performance that had him drained.
“it’s getting up at seven in the morning,” grothe said of the bulls’ noon kickoff. “i’m still tired from that. When i’m not so worried about football, i play better. I was more worried about getting up early.”
grothe, who was also the team’s leading rusher with 72 yards, finished 19-for-26 for 248 yards. His second touchdown pass in the third quarter was the 40th of his career, good for second in the history of south florida. He is 17 shy of the program record set by marquel blackwell from 1999-2002.
“matt played extremely well,” south florida coach jim leavitt said. “he did a real good job and there were even some passes that could’ve been caught.”
