Casinos in Puerto Rico

Heading to PR Sunday - Tuesday....anyone have any experience with any of the casino hotels? Was looking at the marriott stelaris which has a casino and is on the beach. Hoping to do a little gambling, maybe scuba dive, check out the rain forest or get a surf in (sounds like opposite ends of the island for those two) and then fly back....a little less than 48 hours total....grabbed a flight R/T for $400 from LA...not bad considering it is >8,000 miles R/T

I was looking mostly in Condado, but also interested in Aguadilla or Rincon if anyone has been (would need to rent a car for those i guess)

I used to live on the island, years ago. Man, if it was me, and I was only there 48 hours, I wouldn't waste any time in a casino... There's so much other stuff to see and do.

The beaches are world-class, and the rain forest is very cool too. Make sure to check out Old San Juan, and the old fort (El Morro).

fair point FZ....I was hoping to stay at a hotel that had one so I could get some action in and see if I can pay for my trip. I like outdoors stuff and nature, so think the rain forest might be good option for me if I can get away for long enough (I am not taking time off of work for the trip, so will have to be on some calls from time to time). Are the beaches in the NW side of the island (Aguadillia, etc) better than those around San Juan? thanks for your input....

It's been so long... I was there in 1989. I lived near Mayaguez, on the western side, and we hung out at a place called Crash Boat Beach. I remember Luquillo Beach to the east of San Juan was nice, as well as Ocean Park Beach. That's about all I remember. Sorry!

thanks again FZ....i arrived today and you are right that the casinos aren't much to plan around (the place I am staying at - Marriott Stelaris - doesn't even have VideoPoker and only a couple BJ tables)....view of the beach is great though....tomorrow is already shot with work stuff, so my plan to go scuba diving is out (need to wait ~24 hours before flying after diving and I leave tuesday at 4)...but I am hoping to go for a hike in el yunque rainforest Tuesday am...

hmmm....interesting comment to add there....if you like women and like them pretty seems like this is a solid place to me...i dont know your preferences, but it kind of makes me wonder if you've traveled much or if you perhaps you are just uncomfortable with "different"....all good....i imagine they are not dying for your affection anyway...we all choose our own paths...some narrow...some not....

for a casino, The Ritz San juan is youre place. nice private beach there too. Puerto rico has a nice breeze and beauty wherever you look, except the puerto rican chicks are all ugly as sin, just likethe puerto rican ones here.

I found Puerto Rican chicks to be some of the most beautiful women in the world...

What did you think of El Yunque? What other sights did you get a chance to see? I do remember that there was a lot of nice trim there...

I really liked el yunque...highlight of my trip. Really glad I got up and did it. I rented a car my last day and got to the park around 7am before it officially opens (and 3 am Cali time for me) and did a couple different hikes....probably about 8 miles r/t in total. I literally only saw two other hikers the entire time and that was coming back down to my car at the end after the hike. It was nice driving around the island to and from the park, but other than Condado and its beach and casinos that's about all I got in that was noteworthy....I was only there for about 48 hours and had to keep up with work stuff, so not ideal, but def a good time. Thanks for your input sir! I will see if i can post a couple pics from my hike at some point.

I did find a few VP machines so i retract my statement about no VP

While investors anxiously watch Greece, another debt time bomb is ticking in Puerto Rico as the country scrambles to meet its obligations. The island commonwealth owes $72 billion in total public debt.
Between June 30th and July 3rd the government has to pay close to $2 billion to avoid default on various general obligation bonds, guaranteed debt obligations and other debt like $415 million in electric utility debt.
Joseph Rosenblum, Director of Municipal Credit Research at Alliance Bernstein (AB) says, “We think there is a good probability of a restructuring and if it doesn’t occur now we think the budget challenges going forward will continue to place stress on their ability to honor their debt obligations.”
The government of Puerto Rico has been setting money aside to cover the upcoming payments but has very little money left over to meet future obligations or to cover its daily expenses. On Wednesday June 24th Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner and representative in Congress Pedro Pierluisi testified before a congressional hearing that the US government needs to either help Puerto Rico, grant it statehood, or grant it independence so it may get its finances in order.
He said, “Territory status is a significant reason why Puerto Rico has excessive debt and the sole reason why it lacks a critical tool to manage that debt.”
Bankruptcy is the tool Puerto Rico lacks but the commonwealth could decide to withhold the upcoming payments in order to conserve cash and force a restructuring according to AB’s Rosenblum.

“It’s not unlike what New York City saw back in the 1970s when they declared a moratorium on their debt but in the interim the state government stepped in and you had a higher unit of government push the process,” he said.
But there’s little chance any restructuring would be a clean or smooth process since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth. New York City in the 1970s had the state of New York to help it restructure but whether the Federal Government would help Puerto Rico restructure its debt is unknown.
Rosenblum says, “That makes it interesting. The US government seems to be reluctant to get involved.”

I was there for 3 weeks in 1990....spent it in The San Juan State Pen......13 of us were extradited from the Dominican Republic and arrested as soon as we passed customs at the airport......

My grandmother was born in PR.....still have a few relatives living there......
