I concur. US authorities can also seize laptop computers now. BTW i was leaving
Canada earlier this year and was interogated at the airport gate while waiting my
flight, which was a first.

I was questioned, amongst other things, as to how much cash i had with me &
told the limit is 10K. Luckily i had just under that, including 9K in TCs. They include
them as cash.

Usually this Jack Bauer shit happens when i return. They make you wait for up
to an hour or two, then you spend the same again as they look through every
item in your suitcases, black books, diaries & all your shit, asking enough
questions so that they know your entire life story. They give the choice of me
either waiting while they read all my stuff, or photocopy it so they can read it later.
Choosing the latter i had to sign a paper giving them permission to do so. Maybe
i should have called their bluff on that & called my lawyer, eh?

Now with all the body scanners & xray bullcrap, I will only drive anywhere in the USA & never fly again. Last time I flew was 2 years ago when it wasnt mandatory to go threw an xray body scanner & what not & I was carrying around 10k on my way to California. Driving might take me alot longer but at least I wont go threw all the bullcrap our government makes everyone else go threw at the airport.

What you went threw is ridiculous & should never happen to no one. Our government uses the "terrorist scare tactics" which might have worked after 911 but that stuff doesnt work anymore. We've become a police state & it is getting worse.

WOLFIE_CR wonders: how am I "suspect" of anything by having cash?

Bar: heh

WCR: it would be like claiming that a black person is suspicious of stealing a car....because everyone knows that blacks cant have expensive cars (I am picturing this in a 1960's kind of thing)

Bar: NOW you're starting to get it

WCR: its one thing for me to show up with lots of cash when I am going to gamble....anotehr diff thing if I am caught in a drug infested neighborhood right after they saw me talking to three drug dealers

Bar: No, it's pretty much the same thing to a cop(s) who know that a significant percentage of their agency's funding since the mid 1990s is founded on cash & property seizures.

A former fraternal colleauge of mine at Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (http://leap.cc) - Joseph McNamara - tells the sad story of when he was in his last job working as police chief in San Jose CA.

He appeared before the city council to request more funding so that the city's couple hundred police cars could be updated. They told him, "Sorry, we don't have any more funding for you. If you want cash, you need to increase the amount of seizures from stopped motorists and other arrestees."

^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yes, what this means is that cops work like criminals as well.

Bob Buckhorn's New Whip

Civil asset forfeiture is the practice wherein law enforcement and the government at large take possession of property seized during illegal activities (or allegedly legal activities; remember that whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing?).

If you get arrested, you may get your day in court and found not guilty, but don't count on using your stuff. That's for the important guys like Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn, whose pillaging would make the Vikings blush:

Mayor Bob Buckhorn's city vehicle, a jet black GMC Yukon Denali with tinted windows, was seized from a man charged last month with sex trafficking, sexual battery and forcing someone to become a prostitute.

...

Tampa police seized the SUV on Sept. 28 during their investigation. In addition to transporting prostitutes and the proceeds of prostitution, the SUV was purchased from proceeds of prostitution, police maintain in court documents. In a letter, Fox denied that, saying a cousin's husband bought the SUV at a Clearwater car auction.
Buckhorn pulled the gas guzzler from the department's forfeiture fleet in April, the same month he took office. It has about 105,000 miles on its odometer and averages about 14 miles per gallon.
Fox sounds like a creep, but here in America we have a right to trial. Legally speaking, the mayor is driving a vehicle taken from an innocent man. But rest assured that Buckhorn had good reasons for picking this treat out of TPD's stable:
"The reason I drive it – number one is because I have a family. I have young kids who travel with me a lot and I need a car that's safe," Buckhorn said. "Secondarily, as you can see we often travel with staff and we get a lot of work done while we're traveling. It's easy to do work in a larger car. Thirdly, in the event of a hurricane I need a vehicle that can get though high water, get through debris, get me to a zone where we can take care of business."
Would that we could all get a car from our job to jump puddles and haul the kids around.

It's nice to talk a tough game about law and order, but I hope we all can admit the horrible incentives posed by government executives using the goodies taken from citizens who have yet to be proven guilty in a court of law.

cash is criminal, that is why the largest bill is $100....to make it as difficult as possible to travel with cash.

They had $1,000 bills and larger in the 60's and earlier, no problem.

To keep up with inflation the $100 bill from 1971 would need to be like a $500 bill today.

no way would I fly with 10 k cash, unless I smuggled it like it was cocaine.

While it does suck it is more than worth it to go through the bullshit to fly rather than drive for any distance over about 9 driving hours.
