Cardinals might have already held up the white flag to the Cubs and Houston when they traded J.D. Drew and Eli Marrero to the Braves. Its not that they traded but they did not get enough in return. Jason Marquis, Adam Wainwright (could be decent pitcher in a few years) and Ray King are not enough. They needed immediate pitching help for this year and their only real trade bait was Drew or Edmonds. What a disappointment. With a core team of Pujols,Renteria, Edmonds, Rolen, and Morris all getting older or near free agency this trade did nothing but close the door on the window of opportunity for this team to win a championship!

They are too far from winning it as it is. They don't have Yankees money and the guys they gave up were draining them a lot of dough. Marquis will be a decent addition to the staff I think, but they are a good couple pitchers away and I don't think those guys were going to bring them in.

Wild Bill and bettorstalk,

The reason I said that they have given up is that both Morris and Pujols are near free agency possibly as close as 2005. With the trade of Martinez and now Drew and Marrero, they have gotten no one that can help in 2004. They still need two starting pitchers, bullpen help for middle and late relief, and still are without both a left fielder and right fielder. I have a lot of confidence in Jocketty but we have not kept up with the Astros and Cubs and it is sad to me as a diehard Cardinal fan that we have given up on 2004 in my estimation.
