Cannot believe the amount of violent crime right around me!

same thing happened to me in my very affluent neighborhood just 2 weeks ago. 2 young males sitting in a car outside my house for close to an hour, right before dark. Finally I asked what they wanted and they said they were just talking and then apologized and drove off.

I don't know if I watch too much TV but it really scared me. Kind of sad and to think I remeber when I was a kid my parents sometimes didn't lock the door at nite.

Worse part is I think I am more afriad of 15-25 year olds. When I was 15 there was no way I would sit in a running car in front of someones house for an hour. May have been harmless but WTF.

Hate to be the one that has to say it (though everybody is thinking it) but the vast majority of these violent crimes are commited by black males. Here in Youngstown, OH it is getting worse every year as the inner city ghetto has spread to the surrounding suberbs. Yet if you drive 15 miles away to the all white (yet still VERY poor) neighborhoods there isn't a lick of violent crime. Anybody that think this isn't at least partially a racial issue is lying to themselves. It's really a sad situation with no resolution in sight - the problem is that everybody is too politically correct and afraid to be labeled a racist to talk about it

Drive through black rural areas of Mississippi, and most houses have bars on windows.

Alot of money has been wrongly used in attempts to solve these problems.

Much of the problem is caused for alot of these kids never had a father in their lives. Poverty is NOT the cause as commonly believed. Plenty of poor folks have never harmed a soul.

The vast majority of the shootings are black related because the majority of inner city blacks are involved in the drug trade. They will kill you if you dont pay up for that quarter of marijuana. But on the flipside, the white people dont need guns because all we have to do is run to our lawyers. Black people come through doors and windows to solve matters.

And I was watching an A&E episode of the first 48 hours about homicide detectives. One man was killed. The shell casings were HUGE. It came from a .50 caliber gun. DESERT EAGLE. I mean are you f'n serious? It went right through the guy.

Actually from what I've heard Richmond is getting a little better with the new poilce chief. I read that DC is under a Crime Emergency because of the 14 violent deaths (as of yesterday) in the District so far this month./QUOTE]

I thought that last year they led the nation in murder rate...maybe this new police chief has his shit together, who knows.

Except for a very small affluent area in the west end of Richmond, the city is one big "project". Almost all the major companies have moved out of city limits to the counties.

Ehhhh, I dont know about that Richmond being one big project. The city has some charm but the people there I could do without (thats another story unto itself) You still have Wachovia, Bank of America as well as Philip Morris there.
Actually the reasons companies are moving out of the city limits is because the tax rate is astronomical and Henrico, Hanover and Goochland is making a killing.

A little advice, it has worked out here, just outside LA, get the neighborhood involved with the Police Dept. Ask them what you can do to help, call when you see losers hanging around, take license plate numbers, have your neighbors watch your back. The cops here, they stomp on any little thing that gets going, they appreciate your help and feedback and if they know you they will make more frequent runs in your area.

Yeh. If only we could go back to the way things were before the 20th century I think you meant to say that western society has become more voilent than it was 40-50 years ago. You have to consider that these days media coverage is much more widespread and more than happy to focus on the negative, so either today is not as bad as they make it out to be or the middle of last century was worse than everyone thinks because it just didn't get coverage.

My .02. The other night (late) a 30yo lady lawyer drops off her boyfriend (also a lawyer) and is headed home in her PC Prius . In an urban and quiet residential neighborhood she drives up on the sidewalk, proceeds to drvie 30mph for a half a block in path so narrow her car barely fits, runs over two people, goes a few more feet and veers back toward the street only to smash into a parked car. The couple she hit are still in critical condition. The kicker: they are/were visiting from New York. Lady lawyer had not been drinking or on drugs. When police question her, she says she doesn't recall what happened. The investigation is ongoing.
