Don Cherry's final comments:

“I have just learned I’ve been fired by Sportsnet for comments made on Coach’s Corner Nov. 9,” Cherry told Warmington. “No problem.”
“I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.”
“I speak the truth and I walk the walk,” he said. “I have visited the bases of the troops, been to Afghanistan with our brave soldiers at Christmas, been to cemeteries of our fallen around the world and honoured our fallen troops on Coach’s Corner.”
“To keep my job, I cannot be turned into a tamed robot,” said Cherry." I would have liked to continue doing Coach’s Corner. The problem is if I have to watch everything I say, it isn’t Coach’s Corner.”
“I want to thank everyone who has watched Coach’s Corner over the last 35 years,” he said.

His final message.
“Remember to wear your poppy to honour our fallen soldiers … Thumbs up.”

Canada has a better immigration policy than the US but the elephant in the room is most of the professionals in the urban areas likely don't give a shit about the countries history or feel much need to assimilate.

So someone like Cherry has the reaction he has, but it isn't very articulate and he really isn't going to speak out about the trade-offs of mass migration.

They should wear a poppy? Nah bro, they don't give a shit and your country would rather their economic output than worry about social cohesion.

Sound familiar?

while I've never liked him because of his complete lack of respect of Mario and Jagr getting fired by telling immigrants they should appreciate what they have and wear a poppy to pay homage to folks that came before them is disgusting.

this new cancel culture where you get silenced and banned is Nazism at it's finest and ironically come from folks that call themselves Anti-fascists

Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. They've just changed their name from German National Socialists to Liberal Socialists.

and FUCK YOU ron maclean. You bitches apologizing to the modern woke are worse than they are

dems 'hate jews and whites'?

lol, cmon man

Cherry was always hard on the Euros and French Canadian, generalized and never liked their style of play. He should have softened his stance on Mario . Fuckin' dude was a generational player, cmon Grapes - if Mario was a 'floater' than what was Gretz? face)(*^%

From my Albertan Aunt on Facebook - pretty much sums up the state of our Nation

It’s pretty sad when Don Cherry is held more accountable than the Prime Minister is.

that's a horrible generalization. Some are very grateful adn give back , both sides of the border. We are all immigrants (or descendants of) , dont forget that. And of course they care of their economic output- that's why many come over

Why won't they wear the poppy then? Many of them aren't too interested in learning about your country's history, for better or worse. And no one is going to require that they do so as long as they're willing to prop up the Vancouver real estate market, etc

And I wasn't referring to the migrants as caring about economic output. I was referring to policy makers.

I guess in 15-20 years we'll see how much those traditions endure and how much strength there is in unencumbered diversity.

And of course I don't mean all of them, not even close. But enough for the iconic Don Cherry to notice.

they need to wear a poppy to be Canadian, to assimilate ? I didnt get a poppy this year. U off the deep end?

'Many of them aren't too interested in learning about your country's history, for better or worse.'

generalize much? good grief, stop

in 15-20 yrs, govt debt/incompetency will dictate how pretty of lack thereof this picture looks. Since we dont have large families anyone we need people to fund future liabilities (ask Japan). . .................... Get your ass in policy , be a policy maker ....be the difference if you are so concerned about 'unencumbered diversity'

Well, if you think there are no issues with current assimilation in CDN then I guess it is much ado about nothing.

Weird he would get all worked up about such a stupid little thing, ey?

are you extrapolating Don's statement? Can you let us know exactly what he was saying, i think you have those powers. And i do think you're wasting your fantastic talent with over 23,000 posts here at the rx while lacking the courage to take on a more powerful project - 'unencumbered immigration diversity' policy . Pity, eh?...will see in '15-20 yrs'..lol

No one that averages 4.7 posts a day or whatever should offer opinions about anything on any subject, EVER. Because if they have a take they should run for President instead? C'mon now.

I just find it funny he's lecturing a segment of the population on what they should be doing and they obviously couldn't care less about something like that.

And of course his gripe was about assimilation. But if you say it isn't an issue then it isn't an issue, that's excellent. I'm not too worried about CDN.

Think we're done here...Maybe you should run for IMF chair and fix those sovereign debt issues. :)

I like that expression he used about being himself. I use a similar expression with my wife when she tells me what I should say to the kids or something. "If I say that, then I wouldn't be Willie, I'd be Lisa, and I like being Willie" :)

what's funny about this whole situation is that if you've been watching Cherry for 30 years this was not even a rant. Getting fired over this is embarrassing to everyone and really I wish he actually said what he wanted to say, but he clearly held back.

He should of said that "these woke fuckers make everyone aware of Gay/Tranny pride MONTH and close the cities for Black/Somali/PuertoRican/Pakistani pride parades but don't have enough respect for the country they live in to respect ONE DAY to remember fallen soldiers. Bunch of cvnts...go wave your fucking rainbow flags as Toronto FC games while sucking on your mocha soy late while waiting in line for your gender assignment surgery but certainly don't show any signs of appreciation for the people that allow you to live your godless, miserable useless confused life"

now THAT would have been a real Don Cherry rant

yes, you are entitled Willie, just as i am. The question is - such a statement grounds for dismissal? crazy. Sportsnet caved. Why did the NHL feel the need to even comment? worried about backlash?

not a good precedent. VOMIT material .

my practice employs 7 people do i fire them if they spew 'insensitive ' comments? HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE.

Whatever message he had to say to “you people” went unheard because they’re not watching hockey much less some in between periods diatribe by a 85 year old white man.

Don Cherry could very well be a stand up guy but it doesn’t excuse his prejudice’s to anyone that’s not a good Canadian boy. His bigoted comments have been well documented for years. Up until now it's always been excused as Grapes being Grapes.

I’ve been a fan of HNIC and coaches corner for 20 years. He brings little to the table anymore besides his clownish suits and his narrow vision.
