Take a closer look.

Rays pitching over past 27 games is allowing just 4.1 runs per game

That's Top 5 MLB level

And in same 27 games, they're averaging 6.1 runs per game....a higher pace than their first 36 games where they averaged just 5.3

Oh, they're 16-11 in that stretch, which is a pace equal to 96 win season

In short, the Rays over past four and a half weeks are performing better than last year's team in both pitching and offense.

How many teams typically have a 27 game stretch where they win at least 16?

My guess is at least half the entire league in any given year

Rays have been hitting and pitching very well and have been very unlucky this year, losing a lot of close games. Just a matter of before they entrench themselves solidly above .500. And that will still not be enough to move above third place

I'll take the under 150 steals for the max. Upton can't reach first base (is he the worst leadoff hitter in baseball?) and batting in front of Longoria, they shouldn't be trying to steal that much

... just looked up the stats and Crawford is 36 for 39. That is pretty fucking good

Having said that, UPTON is way overrated.

GREAT to see this post from my StPete pal, FHEAD as it offically extends our running disagreement into it's third year regarding the greatness of both Bossman Upton and Joe Maddon.

:howdy:

Don't give up our boy Melvin yet, brother

Since May 20, he's batting a much more respectable .269 over 22 games played

In those 22 games he's scored 13 runs and swiped nine bags (a pace equal to about 100 runs and over 60 SB)

Rays have the most potent offense in MLB even with Upton's early season struggles.

Wait until Bartlett gets back and gives a steady on base fast runner in front of him.

TOMG weighs in: I'll take the under 150 steals for the max.

Bar: Are you a cannabis consumer? Cuz I'm doing my best to assemble friendly futures wagers that will allow me to take an extended road trip and at each stop have an Rx friend provide the good smoke as payment for losing their side....heh

TG: Upton can't reach first base (is he the worst leadoff hitter in baseball?) and batting in front of Longoria, they shouldn't be trying to steal that much

Bar: Oh no....You should see the fun that ensues when any two of the team merchants gets on first and second (Upton, CC, Bartlett)

The other night vs Nats, double steal with BJ in front and the startled catcher hurries his heave and it's into left field

TG: .. just looked up the stats and Crawford is 36 for 39. That is pretty fucking good

Bar: yep....Dig the overall team thievery....103 SB and just 18 CS

But when you have such good hitters following, a player on base is more likely to score no matter what their baserunning ability; with bottom of the lineup hitters following, being a great baserunner does increase their chances of scoring nicely. With Longoria and Pena coming up, I just want someone who can reach base; with Dioner Navarro and Akinori Iwamura coming up, that's when I want someone who can move around the bases on their own. Overall, batting lineup makes very little difference, yet those one or two games could mean the difference. . .

First things first.
Crawford is a very selective base stealer, he picks his spots, he's very successful when he does, but he isn't always going to run.
Crawford will finish with 70 or so.

Melvin has 20 already, but his OBA is awful, you need to get on to steal, he'll get 60 max. and that's being kind.

Together I don't see the two combining for more than 125 total.

Keeping the runners moving, especially when they're so rarely thrown out, helps reduce double plays against.

I anticipate this here thread as one of my most satisfying Bump jobs come late September

At least you were right on this part. Very satisfying. Only 16 games left and still under 100 steals. At least Crawford tried tonight, thrown out twice

Red Sox winning their game (if only that under can hold up), Rangers losing theirs. It's all good

Thought about using my SuperPowers to change the title so it reads, "....150+ SB in the next three seasons combined??"

But that would be unmanly.

You mean the same Pena hitting .227? As good as Pujols? Am I reading this right?

i read none of these posts...but i hope someone can say they got to 200 SB and 200 HR....haven't paid much attention but if the team gets to that point.....VERY IMPRESSIVE....(although if no playoffs --- not quite as much).. think they will be 2nd all time to do this. How does it look????

184 HR, 175 SB

They just caved on much of the basics over past 30 games.

When they swept two from Sox on Aug 6, they were 60-48

Since then, 13-25

On Aug 6, the bullpen was fifth in the AL, tenth in MLB....They imploded

And the combination of Mel Upton and Pat Burrell being utterly absent save for a month each (June for Upton and Aug10-Sep10 for Burrell) is what kept the offense constantly inconsistent after July 1
