going from west to mid west.

wasing going to rent a uhaul, but by the time i pay for gas, get the tow dolly for the other car, it will be close to $1400 that is with out gas yet.

if i get a mover, they will move everything and all we do is pack. i imagine it cant be too much more, plus less aggravation

thanks

bigbet- You can get that rate ALOT cheaper if you do decide to move yourself.

Call the three major moving companies.........UHAUL, RYDER, and BUDGET..........and ask for the rates.

When they quote you tell them that you found a cheaper rate at one of the other BIG TWO.

If they do not lower it then and there, they may call you back with a lower rate later and you can always cancel the one you booked.

With this method, I moved my girlfriend from Boston to Las Vegas in a 27 footer for a mere $300!!

When I moved from Vegas to Florida, I only paid $483 for a 27 foot truck.

Shop around and keep bugging them...........find coupons also for 10-20% off at various places too and throw that on them AFTER they give you the best rate also.

Bigbet...without a doubt it is cheaper to do U-Haul, it isn't even close. I was quoted a move from Reno to New Jersey, a move where I pack the stuff and it was over 6 dimes, not including a car. I have no idea how much more if I had them do the packing, but I hear it is ridiculously expensive. Anyways on U-Haul I can get the truck for a little over 2 dimes, including a tow trailer for two cars. I have a buddy who moved from Vegas to Chicago and his company paid for it. He has a much bigger house so it isn't all that comparable, but he said all-in two cars plus moving the contents of a 4-bedroom house cost his company almost 13k. So without a doubt, you will pay a huge premium to have it done.

WB, i have a quote of $1300 from ABF.

my sister used mayflower to go from philly to orange county, and it was $1700. they packed their own stuff, but mayflower loaded and unloaded the truck

damn, moving is expensive!

Well definitely something said for negotiating. My quote was for summertime when everyone moves and I didn't attempt to negotiate because it was just for informational purposes. I was told that prices can be up to 50% less if you move October to March because all the moving companies get hungry that time of year. I suppose same for U-Haul.

Ok, perfect.

Now keep calling around.

When one will not go any lower, dont panic.

One of them will call you 2-3 days before your move and offer you a better rate than the one you have saying "they have extra trucks available" or something.

When are you moving?

Remember, you can always have 2-3 rentals reserved........then cancel.

When you go to cancel three days before your rental........boom, they will probably go lower.

When do they accept the coupon???

I really do not remember, sorry.

However, you should go for the NEW book............usually only 25-30 bucks.

You will get a steal rate in mid-November. No one is doing anything on the moving front and with the holidays coming all those moving company managers and the employees that do the hard labor are hard up for cash to buy gifts. Without a doubt the best time to move is between then and mid-December, so you should expect even better deals when it comes time.

I have made major moves 4 times, I am pretty much a veteran at it. I did it U-Haul twice and it wasn't all that bad. The one thing annoying about moving companies is they are so dodgy on the delivery times. Last time I did a move I got stuck waiting 6 days for my stuff. I was sleeping on an air mattress and eating out the whole time and it was well within their rights as they only give a one-week window for delivery. Cable guys had to set up a box for a 13" TV I had no intention of using, but just packed in my car knowing this all could happen. And the gas mileage on those trucks is better than you think, but moving cross country in November is difficult due to the weather and crossing the mountains.
