I got in an argument with a guy yesterday.

Can an NCAA College Basketball team be selected for the NCAA Tournament even if they have a losing conference record?

I know they can get in the tourney if they win their conference tourney, but can they get in with a losing record in their conference?

Can anyone tell me, if so, what are some of the teams.

Thanks in advance guys.

Unless they win their conference tourney I believe that a team with a losing record cannot be selected -go the the NCAA site to verify this as I remember hearing something about this last year

I know a team with a losing overall record can not get in the tourney, but how about a losing conference record.

.........one of many reasons the tourney is classified THE BIG FRAUD.

Another BORING regular cbb season is coming to a close, a regular season that means very little.

I realize the tournament would be so much better if the Post season games didn't count like College Football. Nothing like winning every game in the regular season and then playing for nothing January ! I'll take the NFL, Baseball, and College BB regular seasons if that means we get games that matter at the end of the season.

there have been a few -500 teams in the tourny... not sure what their conf records were.

most won their conf tournys and were play-in game winners

ok... just looked it up, found one, I know there are more.

2005 oakland had a 6-10 conference record

won their tourny

beat alabama a/m (play-in game)

lost to N carolina

PPP is correct

Yes, it's called an Automatic Bid or berth

When the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee convenes on Selection Sunday, their work is nearly half-done. Of the 65 spots in your bracket, 31 are automatically assigned to conference champions -- leaving 34 spots for "at large" teams to be selected on their relative merits.

ONLY in the Ivy League.... it goes to the team with the best regular season record. ( they have NO Conf Tournament )

does the regular season mean very little to the teams looking for one of the 34 "at large" spots?

are you saying that there should be fewer teams in the tourny? or more? what more do you want? they are taking the winners of conf tournys PLUS 34 more teams.

it's not very exciting watching a 1 seed play against a 16 seed, couldn't imagine them expanding the field.

are the 64 teams in the tourny the top 64 teams in the country? maybe, maybe not. but it's darn close. and a lot better that the BCS as far as crowning a champ.
