If the 49ers keep the #1 pick , either Smith or Rodgers seems all but certain to be the fifth straight quarterback chosen with the No. 1 pick. But the club isn't betraying strong feelings about either college star. McCloughan (49ers V.P.) said he has a favorite, but could cite almost no differences between the two, other than Smith's height advantage and Rodgers' superior arm strength...

This looks like a close call...remember when Ryan Leaf and uh what was his name Peyton something or other were being debated:howdy:

WHICH WOULD YOU SELECT WITH THE TOP PICK?

A Smith
B Rodgers

49ers entered exclusive talks with Smith and his agent, Tom Condon

Neither.......give me Mike Williams, Ronnie Brown, or Cedric Benson. It simply takes too long for bad teams to develop QB that are taken.

if you put rodgers on the 49ers with a new offensive coordinator annually not sure he does too well

Rodgers playing against the Lions this week- he has owned them;

The Packers are (9-1) against Detroit with QB Aaron Rodgers as the starting quarterback. The only loss to the Lions came when Rodgers left the game in the first half with an injury in 2010 at Ford Field.

Rodgers has registered a 100-plus passer rating in eight games against the Lions, has thrown for at least two touchdowns in seven games, and thrown for over 300 yards in five games.

In the 10 games, Rodgers has thrown for 2,559 yards and 19 touchdowns with only five interceptions. Dating back to 2008, when Rodgers first started a game against the Lions, he has thrown for the most yards and touchdowns against Detroit of any quarterback in the NFL over that span.

Rodgers overall passer rating of 111.0, 68.29 completion percentage and 8.92 yards gained per pass attempt are the highest of any quarterback who has started at least four games against the Lions since 2008.

Amazing, Simply amazing.

What did people see in a gimmicky offense with Alex Smith? Because he is smart and has a solid work ethic which are true but it ends there. Here is his problem. He simply doesn't have the talent to be an NFL starting quarterback.

Alex Smith is a starting NFL qb.
Not top 10 but he is starter quality.

Not exactly an Alex Smith apologist but the deck was stacked against him in SF with some incompetent coaching and a franchise willing to throw him under the bus. I'm glad he's doing better.

This is my excuse for Tim Couch ( the only NFL qb I have "missed" on) No stability in Cleveland, best wr was Kevin Johnson from Syracuse. Who? Exactly. Team and coaches were completely horrible. He could have played.

I remember being in favor or Aaron Rodgers but didn't really want to take either at #1.

I still think Trent Edwards would make an above average QB in the NFL with a decent O line though. Same for David Carr.

Not sure if I'm right on those latter parts but it's how I feel.

Yea I think Carr could have been good in the right place.
QBs can get ruined if they are in the wrong situation.

Call me crazy but I believe if Jamarcus Russell would have been drafted into the perfect situation he would have been a good QB.
