My monthly cable bill (Comcast) is very high. I have a few packages for movies and need the NFL network and it all adds up to a big number.

I did what was suggested here and call their 'retention' dept. threatening to switch to DTV. I was led to believe that they might cut me a deal to keep and they would not lower their fees by one penny.

Has anyone had better luck with this using Comcast?

I got the movie packages for a month and just DVR'ed all the good movies and than canceled them at the end of the month.

All they do anyways is just keep showing the same movies with like one new one a month

I need HBO for entorage and the wire and that NFL show and generation kill

and showtime for weeds and secret diary of a call girl ;)

I could save some cash by waiting for the dvd's but i like my package. i am just wondering because i thought i had heard of people getting deals when they threaten to leave.

its worth the cash to me but it is a big number. i'm not really complaining though.

You don't ask for the retention department...that is a mistake.

If you ask for the retention department that gives them a heads up you want to play the game.

Act dumb and angry...and threaten to quit...you have to follow through with starting the disconnection process on the phone ....then they are trained to send you to retention...and give you a deal to keep you.

And if that doesn't work...hang up...and try again with a different CSR until it works.

The movie channels are probably overrated. I can't say it's legal, but most of my friends just burn DVDs on their computer to watch. The movie channels any company has are redundant as hell and not worth the money IMO. Just go to Red Box and pay a buck or whatever when you feel like watching a movie. They have those things everywhere nowadays.

I have basic cable tied in with my home phone and internet plus 2 cell phones for $300/month. Would this be considered high?

comcast sucks man. i just got rid of them recently and while i am not happy with what i have now it is because i was trying to save some coin. i am going to switch my TV to Direct TV and leave my cable in place with ENMOTION and I don't need a home phone but if I did I would go Vonage without a doubt.

High, IMO ! I'm at about $130 with the bundle of phone, net, and lots of TV,HBO,etc. The cells should run way less than $170.

How much are you paying Grog?

Bookie, mine is about the same, ~$130 for DTV, $25 for earthlink, $40 for phone (complete waste IMO but my wife wants it and all the attendant crap she signed up for) and $130 for cell phones (wife and mine), which includes email and internet for her.

Probably not for you then. Best if you have some experience with satellite dishes as they take some set up work but well worth the cost.
