Anybody who thinks De La Hoya got robbed, needs to watch a replay of the Oquendo-Byrd fight. This was an ALL-TIMER SCREW JOB. IF Byrd won 5 rounds, that would be generous. Not to mention, the ref not awarding a knockdown to Oquendo. I had NO $$$$$$ on the fight, in case anyone thinks I'm bitter. Nor did I have a rooting interest. Just sick about the SHAM that boxing is - Worse than WWF.

I'm going to play Devils advocate here. Just an fyi: I had no money on this because I wanted to do a one and done on this and play on it in Vegas. They had no line for this. I thought Oscar easily won that fight after watching it last week.
After watching it tonight I easily see the argument for Mosely. Whether we like it or not we are at least somewhat influenced by the HBO commentary. I didnt see the same fight I saw last Saturday when I watched it again tonight. I saw a lot less active DLH tonight.

In tonights case, I do not think Byrd won. I could see a draw or a Fres win, but I understand the theory. Fres picked his spots and didnt fight he whole fight. His power punches were alot more obvious. Byrds were shorter punches and alot less obvious. Fres truly picked his spots. Byrd worked and jabbed the whole fight. He didnt take any breaks.

I see the judges prespective and I see the fans. Fres did alot of wrestling when he was vulnerable and in my opinion one does that when he cant box out of the problem he is in. In my opinion a fighter should possibly be penalized for that.

On the flip side, I thought Fres landed the more effective punches. However, when Byrd landed his HBO was alot more less vocal about it. Not right from the start, but it seems that they pick side after a few rounds and generally stick with it.

I could break this whole mental process down but I
want to go drink instead. Bottom line, Byrd was a more true boxer tonight. Fres was effective but not true. He also has a stamina problem.

I would have probably gave this fight to Fres and I thought he had absolutely no chance. Spinch, weigh in.

I taped the fight... and when the announcer stated it was a unanimous decision and then preceded to read out the scores... you can see Chris Byrd mouth "he one, he one" or something like that, while gesturing across the ring to Fres. And then when they announced Chris Byrd as the winner, Byrd was shocked, and said "Wow." No way Byrd won that fight. Politics.

I just watched the replay and I have to disagree, I had Byrd winning the fight on my scorecard.
Observations:
1)whormoan, What knockdown??? the one where he tackled him in the early rounds, or the beginning of the 12th, when he hit him in the BACK and pushed him, look again.

2) Byrd should have gotten a knockdown in the 12th, when he hurt Oquendo and was tackled. At the very least, a point hsould have been taken away for the tackle.

3) the HBO announcing was HORRIBLE. Lampley would say BIG RIGHT for Oquendo on punches the would miss by a foot. Foreman had to have sipped Harold Lederman's drink, thinking there was a knockdown on an obvious push, chiding the referee for admonishing Oquendo when he hit on the break, and basically cheering on Oquendo.

4) Eddie Cotton did a poor job, Oquendo was holding, headlocking, and only one warning was given.

I have to wonder why HBO's clowns were cheerleading Oquendo, I'm sure it had some influence on those that think Oquendo was robbed.

I did not have money or any other interest in the fight, please look at it objectively and see that this was not the supposed "robbery" that you are calling it.

GD, you make many valid points and I agree with you on much of what you had to say. I do not like Oquendo because he is a dirty fighter. When the going gets rough, he gets dirty and does not fight fair. He would hit on break in this fight, commit to rabbit punching(and he and Byrd are supposed to be friends), and tackle Byrd when hurt. I honestly believe that if it were not for that tackle, he would have been taken out by Byrd.

He deserved to get robbed.

ask him, if the frustration evident on his face throughout the fight was because of Oquendo's roughhousing and dirty tactics, or because he thought he was losing the fight?
