FORT LAUDERDALE --
Carrie Underwood and
Queen Latifah put their
Pants on the Ground in honor of the Super Bowl.
The singers, who are performing the pregame entertainment before Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday, broke into a rendition of the
American Idol sensation
Pants on the Ground on Thursday.
The song has become a pop-culture sensation in the past month since
Larry Platt sang it on the Fox show. Vikings QB
Brett Favre then sang it in the team's locker room after a playoff win against the Cowboys.
Underwood, a former winner of
American Idol, was joking asked about the cultural significance of the song:
"As a songwriter I know we all aspire to write something that is catchy and has a message. And I think the youth of America can learn a lot from Pants on the Ground. And they can pull their pants up ... because it causes all kinds of back problems. I've seen the studies."
Underwood will sing the national anthem prior to Sunday's game between the Colts and the Saints. Latifah will perform
America the Beautiful.
A Grammy-award winning artist, Underwood said she was slightly nervous about performing on the biggest stage in American sports.
"My biggest fear is the words," she said. "Of course you know the words. But if you're going to mess up, that'd be the time, right?"
Both artists said they would be rooting for the Saints in Sunday's game, perhaps a reflection of the national mood favoring the New Orleans team. Colts QB
Peyton Manning said on Wednesday he realizes that the Colts will not be the sentimental favorite against the team that represents the city that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Bengals WR
Chad Ochocinco, serving as a reporter for his Ochocinco News Network, asked the final question to the duo. Latifah recalled a meeting with Ochocinco at a California auto body shop after he had signed with the Bengals out of Oregon State.
"I'm so proud of you," Latifah told Ochocinco. "You've grown so amazingly well." --
