Dont know much about computers, and even less about laptops but Im thinking its time to get me one(not getting in enough post during working hours). Not looking for anything too fancy but something to do the basics, emails, download music, watch vids, do homework. Also I wouldnt mind having something that I could hook a mic up to for skype and recording music.

How much should I expect to spend and where do I go to get me one? Thanks in advance Wolfie and Adam, the rest of you can go f!ck yourselves.

Entry level laptops are so dirt cheap now it's ridiculous... thing is you'll still be overspending in CR :(

do NOT get a intel celeron

get either a normal dual core intel or amd 64, you get more performance/bang for the buck with intel (these days anyway)

if you get a system with vista (100% likelihood if you buy a new computer) then get at least 2 gigs with RAM and ask an IT savy friend if he can put XP in it, if you are not going to do anything job related then give vista a try (I for instance cant go that way, dont want to be wondering if something is not working because I misconfigured something OR because there is a bug with vista)

recent trip to the US I got a very very good computer for 650 dollars (including upgrade to 3 gigs of memory)

if you buy the computer here you will probably get a keyboard in Spanish, I cant stand those (and I am a Tico so .......)

do NOT get any of the stupid extended warranties

a decent computer here in CR starts probably at 1k, paying more than 1.5k is a total waste of money

in terms of brands try to avoid dell (quality gone totally downhill except for their server line), sony is very expensive, hp/compaq are decent value and toshiba is great in terms of support here

Thanks for the tips Wolfie, actually two people have already offered to pick one up for me in the states so I will probably just go that route, but I take your processor advice before deciding on a model.

as a suggestion, see if your contacts can go to an actual office depot store.

I got fed up of fighting with the jacka@#$@$ of best buy and circuit city and the last 3 laptops I have bought have at been office depot

This last laptop I got......I say to the salesman "whats the catch, whats wrong with it?" he looks at me and says "nothing at all, I have a list of 30 laptops I need to get rid of to put the new models in display " (and as he says that he shows me the list)

In retrospective I should have gotten 3 laptops more and resell them here!

if you can snatch a good sale you are all set :103631605

also if you can (and well you may or may not) research the model, pick a few candidates and go to amazon.com and read the reviews, specially the bad ones, whatever is wrong with the computer probably other people has already listed it on the reviews

I have gone through about 9 laptops in 10 years, have never bought one here but from what I have seen these guys BTC have good prices and deal with bunch of laptops (its better to avoid the small stores that have very few in stock, they sell toshibas)

Either one of those you mention are going to cost you dearly.

If you buy it in New York go to J&R and make sure you dont take more money than what you need for the laptop.........that damn store is very tempting
