War, since you're an insider, let me bounce a question off you.

Let's say I'm looking for an off lease(3 yrs old/35k miles) Toyota 4 Runner Ltd in good shape.

The spread between Blue Book wholesale & retail is probably 5-7k(?). If buying from the dealer with no warranty, what's a fair amount over wholesale?

Oh yeah, Welcome to TheRx!

Things to consider for sure. :nopityA: :suomi:

Thanks TTinCo, I've been lurking around here for years just finally decided to register and get involved. Most dealers will try to mark up their cars about $2000 over what they have in it. Don't quote me on this but I think the national avg made on the front end (no warranty or financing) is around $1700. As for the Blue Book, I know in the South it is by far worse book to use. The Black Book will give you a lot better idea of what the dealers have in them wholesale and what they should be retailing for. Another thing for everyone to remember is that financing and warranties are also marked up and you can haggle with them on the price of the warranty or your interest rate. Dealers will mark the warranty up a few hundred dollars and they will mark your interest rate up because they get paid the difference or a percentage of the difference between the rate the bank or finance company gives them and what they tell you the rate is. If they use the exact rate they are given they still get paid $100-200 so I would ask to see the approval. If they don't want to show it to you then be aware. TT, let me know what year model and, I'm assuming your from the midwest, I can pull some auction reports and give you a good idea of what your looking at.

Good info to know, and it fits perfectly with what I've heard. I've heard people say not to pay over $1500 above wholesale, and to walk away if they won't take it (Knowing that it's going to take quite a bit of work & BS to get down to that #).

I love going into battles with info like this. :toast:

LOL. I just know that a lot of sales types enjoy gambling. After all sales is gambling and involves a lot of risk

That is true, and in a way I am a sales person, not on the forums though, and not the annoying kind...I could never sell something to someone they didn't need or want. :103631605

Journey,,, the biggest advantage you have is $$ and knowledge,, jsut as TT said, I have also used the 1000.00 over wholesale OFFER,,,

this is what I do,, take a note pad, find the car (1-2 years old) write down car and name of carlot, make the offer (1000.00 over wholesale) then tell em 1 shot,,, then Im walking, I will buya car today, no negotiations,,,, when they come back with a counter offer that is Not the price lool,,, I give em my Number and go next door, and do the same thing,,, this limits your options but puts the HEAT ont he dealer cause they know your not Fing around,,,

Ive bougth 2 cars this way, works every time,,, lol,,, I had 1 guy in front of me Argueing with anohter guy across the street 1 time!!! lol very funny,,, it works great when you have cashhhhhh :money8:
