Indianapolis, IN, United States (AHN) - The Butler Bulldogs, who romped through the NCAA Tourney as underdogs and came within two points of an unlikely national championship, extended head coach Brad Stevens' contract through the 2021-2022 season Thursday.

Stevens, 33, signed a 12-year deal, though terms remain undisclosed. The deal likely includes a significant raise from the $750,000 he made last season, as expressed by athletic director Barry Collie.

“Brad has demonstrated that he’s the right fit for Butler University,” Collier said in a statement. “Our program has grown under his leadership, and we’re excited about our future under his direction.”

Collie, a Butler alum and former basketball coach himself, locked down the sought-after coach, avoiding the possibility of Stevens skipping to a vacant position at a major division school like the Pac-10's Oregon or ACC's Clemson and Wake Forest.

Stevens is 89-15 overall in three seasons, going 33-5 this season and capturing his second-straight Horizon conference Coach of the Year Award.

“Tracy (his wife) and I are thrilled and very thankful for the opportunity to continue to play a role for Butler University,” Stevens said in a statement. “We are already looking forward to the 2010-11 season.”

Nice to see a solid coach not get lured to a big school by big bucks and big notoriety.

Hats of to Brad Stevens, I hope he has continued success as Head Basketball Coach of The Bulldogs for years to come..
