Bush Warns Syria Not to Harbor Iraqis

Search
President Bush warned Syria on Sunday not to harbor fleeing Iraqi leaders and asked for patience as the United States and allies restore order in Iraq.

Bush also contended that Syria has chemical weapons, a charge made in recent CIA reports and one denied by Syria.

Asked whether Syria could face military action if it does not turn over Iraqi leaders, Bush said: "They just need to cooperate."

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said earlier Sunday that some top members of Saddam Hussein's government had taken refuge in Syria. Some have remained in Syria, while others have moved on to different countries, Rumsfeld said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Allied forces have captured a half brother of Saddam Hussein in northern Iraq, a U.S. official said Sunday.

Watban Ibrahim Hassan, who had in the past served as an adviser to his half brother, was captured near Mosul as he apparently tried to flee to Syria, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Syria next?

May as well spend the rest of the SS funds now. No need to tease anyone.

“Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it”

On May 7, 1945, just before the German capitulation, Patton had a conference in Austria with U.S. Secretary of War Robert Patterson. Patton was gravely concerned over the Soviet failure to respect the demarcation lines separating the Soviet and American occupation zones. He was also alarmed by plans in Washington for the immediate partial demobilization of the U.S. Army.

Patton said to Patterson: "Let's keep our boots polished, bayonets sharpened, and present a picture of force and strength to the Red Army. This is the only language they understand and respect."

Patterson replied, "Oh, George, you have been so close to this thing so long, you have lost sight of the big picture."

Patton rejoined: "I understand the situation. Their (the Soviet) supply system is inadequate to maintain them in a serious action such as I could put to them. They have chickens in the coop and cattle on the hoof -- that's their supply system. They could probably maintain themselves in the type of fighting I could give them for rive days. After that it would make no difference how many million men they have, and if you wanted Moscow I could give it to you. They lived on the land coming down. There is insufficient left for them to maintain themselves going back. Let's not give them time to build up their supplies. If we do, then . . . we have had a victory over the Germans and disarmed them, but we have failed in the liberation of Europe; we have lost the war!"

And Patton's aide, General Hobart Gay, noted in his own journal for May 14: "Everything they (the Russians) did impressed one with the idea of virility and cruelty."

Nevertheless, Patton knew that the Americans could whip the Reds then -- but perhaps not later. On May 18 he noted in his diary: "In my opinion, the American Army as it now exists could beat the Russians with the greatest of ease, because, while the Russians have good infantry, they are lacking in artillery, air, tanks, and in the knowledge of the use of the combined arms, whereas we excel in all three of these. If it should be necessary to right the Russians, the sooner we do it the better."

Two days later he repeated his concern when he wrote his wife: "If we have to fight them, now is the time. From now on we will get weaker and they stronger."

Having immediately recognized the Soviet danger and urged a course of action which would have freed all of eastern Europe from the communist yoke with the expenditure of far less American blood than was spilled in Korea and Vietnam...

Good point, England tried to rule the world, but then we kicked they're butt. Spain tried to rule the world too and they're not much now either. Yeah let's keep dictating policy to other nations.

Let's set an over/under on how many countries Bushwacker will invade before we are finally rid of him.

Frank, that was lame. We all know that there are elements in the Bush Administration that are tempted toward empire.

So I don't think apples and oranges are worth mentioning since the only thing that DOESN'T missing is actually calling this an empire.

>elements in the Bush Administration that are tempted toward empire

That's very vague... Give names & proof.

I don't know about elements but what about Bush himself. He started this war against the will of the U.N., the mayority of the world, his father, and nearly half of the American public. He tried to start that spy on your neighbor crap. There are cameras in traffic lights and street lights. He's threating Syria.

"apples and oranges"
Considering some of our past discussions you are hardly the person to use that expression.

Rejecting stability as “an unworthy American mission,” Ledeen goes on to define America’s authentic “historic mission”:

Creative destruction is our middle name, both within our society and abroad. We tear down the old order every day, from business to science, literature, art, architecture, and cinema to politics and the law. Our enemies have always hated this whirlwind of energy and creativity which menaces their traditions (whatever they may be) and shames them for their inability to keep pace. … [W]e must destroy them to advance our historic mission.

kaya,

did you know that there's a website (i think it's spy.com) that sells a spray that makes it impossible for those cameras to correctly read your license plate?

or so they say...something about the refraction of light...

Radio,

No I didn't, thanks too, but I don't live there right now so it's not an immediate concern. I will let my friends know though.

Patriot,

Around the time of William Walker there were several attempts to colonize Latin America. In fact Walker had to be put down by force at the Costa Rican/Nicaraguan border.

You can colonize without the existence of a military invasion....

Think about Chile 1973

Or the more subtle hand of the "market"
NAFTA
FTAA
GATT

US global hegemony has nothing to do with occupation by an armed force. (although the congo has troops there, bosnia, kosovo; do you think we simply pulled up all roots in these regions).

"winning hearts and minds..."

Remember, the ultimate goal of Big Brother was to have you truly believe that 2+2=5 because "he" (the state) said so...after that there was nothing more needed.

Patriot,

I just mentioned attempts to colonize. I am not personally aware of any U.S. colonies. Although I don't know what you call Puerto Rico other than our property.

The point is that Bush wants to dictate to the world. Besides why have colonies? That's just an expense and headache. Bush prefers to bully through military might.

Not Big Brother, that's the NEA
