When the LA Times prints good news about the GOP, you know something is wrong in Dem-land.

WASHINGTON -- President Bush heads into next week's Republican national convention with voters moving slightly in his direction since July amid signs that John F. Kerry has been nicked by attacks on his service in Vietnam, a Los Angeles Times Poll has found.

For the first time this year in a Times survey, Bush led Kerry in the presidential race, drawing 49 percent among registered voters, compared to 46 percent for the Democrat. In a Times Poll just before the Democratic convention last month, Kerry held a 2 percentage point advantage over Bush.

That small shift from July was within the poll's margin of error. But it fit with other findings in the Times Poll showing the electorate edging toward Bush over the past month on a broad range of measures, from support for his handling of Iraq to confidence in his leadership and honesty.

Although a solid majority of Americans say they believe Kerry served honorably in Vietnam, the poll showed that the fierce attacks on the senator from a group of Vietnam veterans criticizing both his performance in combat and anti-war protests at home have left some marks: Kerry suffered small but consistent erosion compared to July on questions relating to his Vietnam experience, his honesty and his fitness to serve as commander in chief.

The Times Poll, supervised by polling director Susan Pinkus, interviewed 1,597 adults, including 1,352 registered voters nationwide, from Aug. 21-24. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

This could, however, be a clever little trick to minimize any Bush bump.

I agree with that whole heartedley.

I can see the NY Times now 2 days after the convention.

"Country rejects Bush Agenda,
Recives only a 4 pt. bounce.

Of course they'll disregard he was down as many as 6 points in the polls 2 weeks ago.

I think it comes down to the debates. If Bush can just debate Kerry even Bush will win in a walk.
Kerrys flip-flopping style works well in debates because some people hear him for the first time, and you know he will say anything that fits the countries mood that day,and then the next day the media will let him get away with backtracking and flip-flopping and parsing of words and of course his nano nuances.

I saw that he leads too - but Bush is trailing in FL, PA, and OH with PA a done deal for Kerry - how can Bush win if he loses these 3 states - remember, TX and NY wash each other and Bush is down 55-0 with California - although Bush is a total failure I don't want to see my taxes go through the roof.

Bush is not trailing in Florida and Ohio. Rasmussen just released his Florida tracking with Bush up by 2. Even Zogby, who tends to tilt democratic in his results, has bush up either 4 or 5 in Ohio.

"DEAD HEAT, TOO CLOSE TO CALL, CLIFF HANGER" so said the media and polls prior to the 2000 Guv. election for Fld. Fast forward to Nov.8th, "in a shocking landslide the people of Fld. ignored the much anticipated "revenge factor" and returned Jeb Bush to office by a wide margin of 57% to 41% for the Dem. opponent".

Southpaws, get used to the term "shocking landslide"!

great post. this is the way it should be though. I'm going to watch these things as unbiased as possible. the've always meant a lot to me.

but the canidates have been so overly coached the last few go arounds, its almost as if they are trying to play even just for the sake of airtime without risking too much in their statements.

It will never happen but you would be surprized at the amount of "Bush 04" bumper stickers you see on the roads of Mass.
