Bush May Back Schwarzenegger in Recall

By SCOTT LINDLAW
Associated Press Writer

August 8, 2003, 8:30 AM EDT

CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush is leaving the door open to campaigning for California Republican gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger if it could help tip the balance in a close recall election, officials said Thursday.

Nearly a dozen people with ties to Bush emphasized he has no plans now to do so. But none would rule it out.

The White House took pains to publicly distance itself from the volatile campaign. Behind the scenes, though, administration officials and Bush re-election aides spent Thursday trying to discern the state of play in the tumultuous election.

They reached out to their network of lawmakers and other influential Republicans in the nation's most populous state on a day when Rep. Darrell Issa, the California Republican who bankrolled the recall petition campaign against Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, tearfully dropped out.

Bush will spend two days in California next week, and officials said they saw no prospect of him campaigning with Schwarzenegger, who served as fitness czar in the White House for the president's father.

"The president believes that this is an issue for the people of California," White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan told reporters as Bush relaxed at his ranch.

Asked repeatedly whether she could rule out Bush helping Schwarzenegger, she wouldn't answer, repeating her insistence that the White House viewed the election as a state matter. Other officials said they could envision Bush campaigning for Schwarzenegger late in the campaign if it was clear Bush could help push him over the top.

Schwarzenegger, with his star power and history of GOP activism, is viewed by the White House as the Republican with the best shot at ousting Davis. It was unclear what Bush would do if another high-profile Republican, such as former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, entered the race. Riordan was the White House's pick to challenge Davis last year, but he lost in the Republican primary to businessman Bill Simon.

Bush has a strong track record in helping carry fellow Republicans to electoral victories. Of the 53 candidates Bush raised money for in last year's elections, 37 won.

The White House is also trying to calculate the impact on Bush's re-election campaign next year. California carries 55 electoral votes, the most of any state.

Duf Sundheim, chairman of the California Republican Party, said he had told White House officials the recall could give the president a major boost in a state Bush lost decisively in 2000.

"There's a lot of enthusiasm we're trying to capture for the president and other Republican candidates," he said. According to Sundheim, the recall has fueled a surge in GOP registrations.

National security adviser Condoleezza Rice, mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in California, said she has trouble imagining herself in that role.

"I don't think I'm of the particular breed," Rice told the National Association of Black Journalists' annual convention in Dallas. "Those people are a kind of special breed, I think, who run for office. We put them through an awful lot. And it's a little difficult for me to imagine doing it.

"I'm not a very good long-term planner. I really don't say 'never' to anything," Rice said. "But it is not on my radar screen to run for elective office."

Schwarzenegger met in April with Karl Rove, President Bush's top political adviser. White House officials said at the time that Schwarzenegger simply dropped by to talk about an after-school program that California voters approved last year and to see what he could do to support U.S. troops overseas.

You would prefer that to what Larry Flynt normally has with him?

Just think of the possibilities of this one..."Governor Flynt has declared next Thursday California Beaver Hunt Day" or "Governor Flynt is shown here cutting the ribbon to open up the newest brothel in California"

I see where Peter Ueberroth has thrown his hat in to the ring as an independent. IMO. the best man for the job, based on his resume, to emerge so far. Briefley: Peter Ueberroth.

1984 Time Man of the Year.
Baseball commissioner from 1984-89.
Headed "Rebuild Los Angeles" for one year after 1992 riots.

Question,

Schwarzenegger is Austrian, can he run? Is he a naturalized citizen (I'm assuming so)? As I understand it naturalized citizens cannot be president, what's the status on other positions?

KMAN you said

"One good thing about rich people getting into politics.... They shouldn't be infuenced by lobbyists or special interest groups."

A prerequisite to get in to politics is that you HAVE to be rich.Elections are won by the richest man in them. That is why books have made Schwarzenazi the favorite. No experience questionable character but lots of money. You need money to buy off the media and create a big grinning fictional character that the public will buy. As gamblers you'll know about public opinion. Davis raised the most money last election and was able to afford an ugly smear campaign. Look at the bill of goods the public bought. If Schwarzenazi wins, God help California. Cali will become a bigger laughing stock than Minnesota.

Of course he will back Arnold. Thats a given. This country is finally starting to turn the corner. We've been in a nose dive with whcih seemed like no chute for the past 100 years. Occasionally we would get a little updraft from the likes of Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich, and Jesse Ventura as of late. Now with the House majority being Republican, the senate majority being republican, the president being republican, along with California ( a state that clinton tried to lock up for the next millenium ) electing a republican governor, we as Americans have hope.

It will take some time to correct the damage done by the democrats but within another fifty years we may be living in paradise!!!!!

It may be time for the democrats to start making travel plans - to another country that is!!!!

An old Arnold health tip for those of you you haven't had a subscription to muscle and fitness the last 25 years.

Rumor has it the Democrats are responsible for the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Can you, in your infinite knowledge of American politics, shed any light on the subject? I like your foursome BTW Ronnie, Newt, Jesse, and Arnold. The four horseman of the apocalypse.

Hello??!!? McFly?!?!?! Anybody in there??? Hello?!?!?!

Reagan was the most corrupt president in our nation's history. There were more indictments in his administration than any other. How about the fact that aside from his crimes he turned the U.S. from the greatest creditor nation to the greatest debtor nation in only 8 years. How about how he raped the guaranteed student loan program.

I was was going to college and post grad school for six of his eight years. I never had a problem getting a student loan. I paid those loans back in full after serving eight years post high school with 7-9% interest over ten years.

How did he rape GSL? Did he make it tougher for you libs not to pay those loans back or what? Default - default - default... You libs think higher education should be free don't you. You think everything should be free because there are so many lazy ass punk liberals who think their to good to work for anyone else. You know it all. Pay back your loans libs and the cost of higher education will in effect go down for us all.

Please expand on all the indictments...

joints,

Ok it appears you need things spelled out simply.

My Pops got his master's at Morehead U. in Kentucky just before Reagan got in. At that time if you were accepted to a school, assuming you qualified in all other ways, you simply applied for a GSL and they issued you a check for the amount of the tuition. By the time I was applying in '89 the most you could get for first year was like $1200. Nothing to do with interest rates or paying late. Also since when are libs known as paying for late or not paying. If anything as far as reputations go rich conservs are known for trying to dodge taxes. As far as libs being lazy, your typical repub/conserv is a blue collar union worker, the epitimy of laziness, so you can step off that tune.

"Please expand on all the indictments..."

You claim to have been in college at that time, if you didn't have the time to watch the news then I'm not going to waste mine looking up historical fact for you, do it yourself. During the same era he not only raped the educational system but also social security benefits. That was the period were you would see the stories on the news about retirees eating cat food because their pensions had been cut to a point they couldn't live on them. Oh yeah you missed the news back then, too busy at grad school.
