Brokaw Astonished Over NYTimes Reporter Being Banned By White House
Tue Nov 30 2004 10:09:36 ET

Outgoing NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw was asked on MSNBC's HARDBALL Monday if the Bush White House has been tough with the press corps, citing as an example of Dick Cheney stipulating no NEW YORK TIMES reporters on his trips.

Brokaw said, "I think they have been too tough.

"The idea that this White House has not given Tom Friedman a long, in-depth interview is astonishing to me. I have had a very good relationship with them, I have gotten to interview the President a lot. I have had access on the phone and other areas and I have been very vigorous in my discussions with them. But no reporter that I know covering national politics and the international policies that are of such great concern today know as much about them as Tom Friedman does and they have completely shut out the NEW YORK TIMES."

No pity from me.

NY Times resembles Dan Rather: a bunch of arrogant, know it all morons. The working atmosphere there exacerbates that:

Individual departments are their own little fiefdoms ruthlessly competing for budget dollars & position / power, many being barely civil to each other. Then you have the publishers / editors wielding their power over their underlings-- they in turn being outnumbered by big city syndicate-uinion employees that basically do what they want, when they're not racketeering.
Nothing could be more dangerous than a group of journalistic don Qujotes who pass themselves off as being of high intellect, constantly railing against imaginary enemies & mis-perceived wrongs, and inciting their readers to take up arms also.

Charles:

the following comment you made reminds me of Limbaugh, Hannity & Coulter: "a bunch of arrogant, know it all morons"

I noticed a pattern with this administration .. shut down the media, fire anyone that disagrees with this administration (look @ Goss with CIA) ....

Not a lot of difference between the USA in 2004 and Germany in the late 1930's when ya think about it

Is that a moonbat in my sites?

Hey Doc - you're such a hypocrite!

Why should the Bush administration give anything to a news organization that hates them with the same caustic attitude that you have. All of their news is slanted against this administration - all of it!

And you expect Bush to give them the time of day!

Geez Doc, you're batting .000

I hope you figure it out some day!

Doc:

BBLight made the key point: the strident, abrasive, assume-the-worst-and-preach-that-gospel-to-the-know-no-better-masses disagreement,

disagreement which in and of itself could be innocuous enough, but:

Let's take a group of coincidences & unclear events-- & assume an evil conspiracy is at hand... has to be, because when I and/or my parents grew up, the then administration did this & that. Why can't the American sheep properly decipher the events I'm reporting-- are they blind, or just too trusting? Don't they realize that those in power & those with money are evil & selfish? I must save them!! Yes, this will be my life's noble cause, my raison d'etre, my free pass when i knock on those Pearly Gates! From now on i must not only report events as they happen, but i must also interpret & place them in their proper context!

cut to newsroom assistant,"Mr. Rather, these are serious accusations-- we'll need to research them further!" "Run the story now! We don't have enough time, Al Jazeera, or heaven forbid, Jennings will scoop us on it! I've languished at the bottom the ratings far too long, it's not doing justice to my vast talents"

now thinking to himself,"I must solidify my place in the pantheon of great broadcasters! Not even my movie-star mug is helping me now. And how can that simple-minded high school dropout Jennings clobber me in the ratings-- while i graduated college-- even learned some French: isn't that ultimate proof of my high intellect? Sad to say, it must be that the average low IQ populace is drawn to one of their own. This all wouldn't be that bad-- part of the price i have to pay for seeing things most average folks can't-- but what is so rankling is to also get clobbered in the ratings by that rightist jerk Brokaw. This has got to be further proof of the average Joe's dimwittedness: poor folks whose income is unfortunately so much less than mine, are drawn to the right. Unbelievable... but i'll fix that rightist jerk-- when it comes time for his retirement announcement, i will orchestrate some event to dampen his limelight!"

If trying to put a slant on news events, instead of just the facts Maám, is not the height of arrogance... in a way folks like these deserve pity: they know no better-- these are people who only see the world through their own eyes, who project their personal experiences onto the rest of us, who feel those experiences have allowed them to acquire fairly close to the sum total of relevant knowledge.

I'm surprised that during the World Series no cartoon came out showing Cheney sodomizing Bush & exclaiming,"Who's your daddy?"
Or that no one's claimed Condi is W's Monica-- and citing as proof the gap in her front teeth...

In the name of ratings-- camouflaged as searching for the Truth & protecting the American public-- all civility & morality's been thrown out the window, while also hiding behind the First Amendment: scads of "alleged" slanderous innuendo is passed off as news & investigative reporting. And editing has given way to painting something in a different light w/ selective cut & paste-- under the guise of condensing a story because few would read/view it in its entirety.

Yes, yes we know Georgie is much maligned by the "liberal" media. And Rather is one that's been there since heck was a pup. But 'ol Dan and Georgie both have the same problem, they're Texans.

YeeeHaaaw!!!

Tom Friedman is the epitome of the arrogant smug NY Times Editorial board. I still remember when he tried to single-handedly force concessions from Israel with his interview with some Saudi ruler who claimed they "might" recognize Israel's right to exist if they give away all the land.

He lives in a complete fantasy world.
