The second pool of future wagering on the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships produced increased handle compared with the first pool on the same four races, as the Classic (G1), Distaff (G1), Sprint (G1), and Turf (G1) attracted $222,056 in handle, an increase of 38.1%.
"We are pleased with the 38% increase in total handle from the first period," National Thoroughbred Racing Association Senior Vice President Ken Kirchner said. "Most importantly, there are very solid value plays in each of the four pools. We’ll continue to work hard to promote the next round of pools available September 19 through 21."
Bettors favored the Classic pool, wagering $104,303 (47% of the Period Two wagering) on 22 individual interests plus a field option that included all other horses. Candy Ride (Arg) was the Period Two favorite for the Classic and closed at 3.70-to-1.
Handle on the other three races was about even with the Sprint attracting $42,651, the Turf $42,218, and the Distaff $32,894. The favorites in those respective races are Aldebaran (5.70-to-1), Storming Home (GB) (6.40-to-1), and defending Horse of the Year Azeri (9-to-5).
Azeri is the only winner of last year’s event favored in her pool. Last year’s Classic winner, Volponi, closed at 31.50-to-1, and High Chaparral (Ire), last year’s Turf winner, closed at 6.90-to-1.
The Breeders’ Cup future wagering closes with a third and final round of pools in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), Juvenile Fillies (G1), Filly & Mare Turf (G1), and Mile (G1) available from September 19-21.
