The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed that officials at NMCSD reported shots fired in the facility, but could not offer further details at this time.

NMCSD advised all personnel to not report to work and avoid the area. Officials at the facility told NBC 7 that, as far as they know, this is not an active shooter drill or training.

At around 8:30 a.m., two California Highway Patrol officers were seen entering the facility through an emergency room entrance near Florida Drive. A steady stream of other patrol cars from multiple agencies could then be seen flowing into the area surrounding the military hospital.
By 8:45 a.m., a SWAT truck was seen storming the facility.

Naval Base Point Loma has been placed on lockdown, military officials said.

Officials at the nearby San Diego City College said officers have set up a perimeter around the campus, but, as of 8:50 a.m., it is not on lockdown.
Officials at Naval Base Coronado said that facility is not on lockdown either.

According to the NMCSD’s website, a fitness center is located near building 26 -- the site of the reported active shooting. The Liberty Center is also located near building 26, a center that offers recreational activities for all active duty service members and NMCSD ID cardholders, including a cyber café, billiards tables, a music room and a 25-seat movie theater.

NMCSD staff is comprised of more than 6,500 military, civilian, contractor and volunteer personnel. The 272-bed, multispecialty hospital and ambulatory complex is located on 78.4 acres in the southeast corner of Balboa Park, about 2.5 miles from downtown San Diego.

NMCSD personnel deploy to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Djibouti and aboard the USNS Mercy. The facility is affiliated with 19 civilian nursing schools, training more than 400 students per year in clinical rotations.

NBC 7 is at the scene. We'll bring you updates on air and online as the situation unfolds.

Since officials have shut down access to the area, traffic is backed up for miles.

No evidence of shots fired at U.S. Naval Medical Center - officials

SAN DIEGO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - An active shooter and three gunshots were reported at the U.S. Naval Medical Center in San Diego on Tuesday, triggering a heavy law enforcement response.
Officials later said there was no sign of a shooting and no reports of deaths or injuries.

"There's no evidence of a shooting right now that we know of, there was just a report of three shots heard," said Navy Region Southwest spokeswoman Amanda Chavez.
The U.S. Navy had said in an earlier statement, based on initial reports from a witness, that three shots were heard in the basement of a building housing a gym and barracks at the medical center around 8 a.m. PST (1600 GMT).

Military police were talking to the person who reported the shots fired, Chavez said.

First responders and Navy working dog units were on scene clearing the building where the shots were heard, the Navy statement said, adding that the medical center was on lockdown and a shelter-in-place order had been given.

Workers from the building were seen coming out in a single-file line with their hands raised in the air, as heavily armed police maintained a perimeter around the site.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent an armored van and a roughly 12-officer SWAT team to assist military police in clearing the building, said sheriff's spokeswoman Jan Caldwell.

Navy Captain Curt Jones, asked about the status of the situation, said, "I would say we're pursuing the information we have and ensuring that everyone is safe."

A post on the medical center's Facebook page had earlier advised occupants to "run, hide or fight," the protocol advised by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in response to an active shooter.

All non-emergency response staff were asked to stay away from the compound. The shooter was reported in building #26, the post said.

The medical center, about two miles (3 km) north of downtown San Diego, includes a 272-bed hospital and a staff of more than 6,500 military and civilian professionals, the center's website said.

A local middle school and two high schools in the area, which is home to the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet, were initially placed on lockdown as a precaution.
