Here is the mistake I believe they made. The boat they were in is a high dollar, well made craft, that can get them to the fishing grounds fast. I am making an assumption that they new the forecast, but decided to go anyway, however running out in two footers is far different than coming home in 4-6 ft seas. They could get out to 50 miles in an hour and a quarter, but getting back may take as long as 3.5 hrs. Since the boat was found at 35 miles and they were reportedly going out to 50, it would appear that the approaching weather caught up to them and made getting back an insurmountable obstacle. Sadly it is something that happens all the time. Fortunately it usually ends up in fishermen being late to dinner and not a tragedy.
