Clip Joint look at his career rather then the first 17 games to start a season...

Ok...I am looking at his career...now what? He had 1 great season as a closer. You act like he has an established career as a closer. Did you happen to watch the playoffs last year?

This guy hasn't been the same.

There are plenty of closers/pitchers with nasty stuff. Being a closer takes a different breed. This guy doesn't have it. Reminds me a lot of Latroy Hawkins...was NASTY as a set up man...put him in the closer role and he can't cut it.

Look at his numbers in 2004 when he was primarily a set up man. NASTY!

I am sure he will have a nice stretch here pretty soon to help his numbers. But I am not going off his numbers. I am talking about his confidence being completely shot and not even being able to throw strikes.

He had 29 saves in 2004, definitely not primarily a setup man. I'll say he has 1.5 years of great closing.

But that being said, he definitely has lost something. Hard to believe that HR can ruin him, since they won the series anyways. But he is definitely struggling mightily. Even a gimme 3 run save isn't a gimme.

He also had 17 holds. He was primarily a set up man for the guy they shipped to the A's to give Lidge the closer role. I can't believe I can't remember his name now. But he was filthy too. That bullpen was sick.

Max,
Who would be first in line to succeeed Lidge as closer, if he can't get stuff going for him.

Wheeler? Qualls?

Welcome back

Lefthander reliever Trever Miller (sprained left elbow) finished his rehab assignment on Wednesday and joined the Astros in Los Angeles on Thursday for the flight back to Houston. He'll likely come off the 15-day disabled list today.

Spot needed

Lefthander Mike Gallo and righthander Ezequiel Astacio are the two most likely candidates to be sent down to Class AAA Round Rock to make room on the 25-man roster for reliever Trever Miller to return.

This is not good for Astros fans...if Lidge does not make a comeback I dont see us going far this year or even making the playoffs.:Sad Face:

Best Wishes...OF :howdy:

That would be him...Octavio Dotel. He was nails as a closer. Injuries killed him in Oakland where he got off to a slow start and then lost his job.

It's really semantics, but Lidge took over closer job around June 22nd of the year, before that he was THE setup man.

The bullpen was sicker before that, when Lidge as a rookie was the 7th inning man, Dotel pitched the 8th, and then Wagner the 9th.

Thats was 3 great closers that worked together and knew their role.

Yep they got Beltran for Dotel. Lidge did a phenominal job after that and last year. He is just in a slump, but with stuff like that he will be just fine. It is simply release point issues. He cannot get his wicked bender over the plate.
