When someone deserts they want to be left behind, that is why they left duh. He had options. He could have gone to his superiors and said he was resigning from the military and taken the consequences. He could have declared that he would not fight anymore. He would have paid consequences. Remember he sent all his personal belongings to the States before deserting. He made a conscious decision, not a spur of the moment decision. There was a right way and a wrong way. He turned his back on his country and his fellow comrades in arms. The lowest form of scum. Leave no one behind refers to POW's, those taken prisoner not those who deserted. A deserter should be left alone to face the consequences of his own personal decisions. Trading for 5 high ranking terrorists is a joke and damned sure not a justification for "leaving no one behind" especially someone who had already shown his behind to his country and his fellow comrades.
