The Red Sox and Major League Baseball are sending security teams to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the Red Sox-Rays series because of a threat made against Boston players, the Boston Herald reports.
The Red Sox received a mailed threat, believed to be postmarked in Memphis, that targeted black and Latin players, citing at least two players by name, the newspaper reports. The named players will have extra security during their time in Florida, even away from Tropicana Field.
The three-game series begins tonight and ends Wednesday.
The FBI and police departments in St. Petersburg, Boston, Memphis and Baltimore have been made aware of the threat, which constitutes a federal crime, the Herald reports.
The Baltimore authorities are involved because a suspect in the case is believed to be from Maryland but living in Tennessee, a source told the newspaper. The suspect was not in custody as of Monday morning. Neither Red Sox nor MLB officials would comment on the matter. But the threat is believed to be unrelated to the brawl between the Red Sox and Rays players on June 5 at Fenway Park.
This could be in the back of some of the Boston players minds? Does this favor Tampa? Im thinking yes...
