What's the average hold a bookmaker achieves on a given handle?

I have heard 4% to 14% which seems like quite a spread

Most expect to HOLD around 4.5%...I am sure some shops its more. if a BOOK is holding 14%, dont play there cause they BOOT all WINNERS..

Theoretical hold on 11/10 bets is 4.55% if your books are balanced all the time. Parlay holds are over 10%, sometimes 25% or higher if you got a lot of people playing 5 teamers or higher. Mistake though is to mistake short periods of time hold against long-term hold. Wait a year until you judge how a book is holding.

Hold will vary from book to book for a lot of reasons. What sort of customers you have, how you treat wiseguys, how soon you open, how and when you move your lines, what kind of action you take, your business model etc..... Hold will be much higher in a shop like SIA then it will be at CRIS for instance. While it's important it's certainly not the only thing to consider either. I'd rather hold 1% on a billion than 10% of a million.

Average in the old days was about 5-7% on straight wagers and between 10-20% on parlays and teasers. This was a very small street outfit with low limits. The players didn't have a clue but neither did the guys running the book, LOL. It was a wash almost. Seems high but that's what it was.

Books in Vegas consider it a good year in bases if they hold over 2%

While working at a particular book in vegas, we had a hold percentage of 9% for about an 18 month span taking into account everything.

ps- At the Castways, NEVER had a losing season in any sport.
