This book talks about successful gamblers, and how they have year after year of success thinking that it can never turn because they work so hard, and have an infallible system. At times, I really believe that with some of the horrible things that have happened to me that I am living that book. Am I totally alone here?

I don't get what you are saying. Are you saying you have won year after year and now you are in a long losing streak? What horrible things have happened to you?

Just bad beat after bad beat. Don't want to bore you with the details. You have your own problems i am sure. Just wondered if from a psychological angle, anyone ever feels like they are snake bitten, or if that is just susperstitious bullshit?

I had a stretch in College Basketball this season, back in February that had me looking up Indian Shaman's in the yellow pages. My favorite bad beat, was a game with San Diego State and BYU. San Diego State was like +13. They rallied from being down almost 20 to force Overtime. In O.T. BYU scores the first like 15 or 16 points. And they end up winning by 15 to 17 points. I was just stunned.

The best pro gamblers have losing 'quarters'.

If you have a losing YEAR you likely either

1) Just experienced a negative 4 SD type event (simply almost impossible) or

2) You are more of a recreational advantage player, and need to raise your game higher.

Many pros go wrong, go bust, especially "followers" that play year 'round, as action/sendouts/greed/etc..grab 'em eventually. Also one-trick/niche pros, guys that rely on a sport for most of their yearly winnings get in bad spots at times, if for a spell, a year, or more.

Doesn't everyone know a Stu Ungar type or two?

I know someone that turned 12K into 380 in 7 months, then went back to 27 in a year, then back to 650 during the next 18 months, then to bust in two years.

It depends to what degree of "gambler" one is, as some wiseguys are selective even with tons of smart marks, and others are action-junkies.

As DPO said, if you haven't had one, you haven't been doing it long..even the best of the best have usually had to get a backer before..sometimes even BMs.

Remember Mike McD in Rounders, " Nobody asks what became of Rounders that took their shots, and missed, they wind up humping lousy jobs on graveyard shifts."..was based on thousands of true stories no doubt.

Kid named Steve(no, neither of those two Steves) in the LV streets back around '89 thru '93..outhouse to penthouse to outhouse then skipped.

As to the answer of the original question? In a word..Yes!

Horseshoe has most of my points. I think infallible system is an oxymoron when used in gambling conversations. Snakebit is another, which conjures up thoughts of superstitions. I knew a lot of gamblers who just had to do certain things, toss all of their pennies, lucky socks, or charms, even eat bsame thing for breakfast everytime. Totally senseless as how could that affect what happens in the event you are betting. What it does is it a cure for self doubt. Or a crutch. I think disclipline and money management are much more important. Sort of fundamentals for the pro. Take a look at the NBA playoffs. I play primarily dogs, and they are just the worst ever. Nothing about luck, bad beats or anything. Just a statistical variance pushing the envelope of probabilities. If I may offer this, you feel snakebit, take some time off, away from everything. Do some soul searching, make a plan, put it on paper and stick with it. Especially sticking with the norm. Don't start trying things you normally do not do. Do not chase, raise limits because you are due. I wish you the best, and hope you find some good antivenom. OF

Everyone has losing streaks and if they tell you they don't then they are lying. If you can weather the storm then stick with what you know otherwise coat tail someone else for a little while. Just for grins, you might make your selections like you normally do and then fade yourself to see what happens. I've had good luck playing teasers in football but never in basketball.

No winning method lasts forever. The secret to many good handicappers is that they have feel for the game and are constantly tweaking the way they look at it. You can't come up with a magical formula and think it will work for a decade without changing. The game changes, the betting public changes and because of that you have to change with it all.

very solid points wild bill and sports monitor. there are so many important factors when it comes to being a successful gambler. So much more than stats and injuries. $$$ management is so huge and cutting back in down times is the difference between a bustout and a proud, winning gambler. this site can be very helpful if people listen to intelligent guys like you. IMO its simple,

Just bet with your head not over it...If you can not bare to lose the amount of your wager REDUCE it to a comfortable level so if you lose it will have less of an effect on you...
