San Diego at INDIANAPOLIS (-72 ; 51)C Even though Indy has clinched the AFC home-field edge throughout the playoffs, HC Tony Dungy says he will play to win this week, with all healthy starters. A couple who might not play are DT Corey Simon (sprained foot) and LB Cato June (sports hernia). Even though Dungy says the main goal is to win the Super Bowl, not just to go undefeated in the regular season, Dungy says he wants his team to stay sharp and to keep improving. However, he does say starters will likely see limited playing time in the ensuing two games. A victory Sunday for the 13-0 Colts will make them only the second NFL team to start a season with 14 straight wins, with the other being the 1972 Dolphins, who went on to finish 17-0.
With their playoff chances in serious jeopardy following last week= s home loss to Miami, the Chargers are promising an extra effort for this game after losing 34-31 in OT at Indy LY. Insiders say the S.D. offensive players say they know they can score points on the Indy defense. And Charger defenders say they have a better gameplan TY against the Colts= no-huddle offense after facing Peyton Manning & Co. at Indy LY.
As for the Chargers= 23-21 home loss as an 11-point favorite last week to a 5-7 Dolphin team, Charger players say they were guilty of taking Miami too lightly. And the word from Miami is that former Charger third-team QB Cleo Lemon, acquired from the Chargers earlier TY in a trade, had given the Miami defense all of Drew Brees= audible calls, so the Dolphins often knew what was coming on many plays, limiting S.D. to 7 points for the first 52 minutes
