Bogus waiter fools diners at 2 N.J. restaurants

Man took $186 from patrons after asking if they were ready to pay

HOBOKEN, N.J. - Police say a man posing as a waiter collected $186 in cash from diners at two restaurants in New Jersey and walked out with the money in his pocket.
Diners described the bogus waiter as a spiky-haired 20-something wearing a dark blue or black button-down shirt, yellow tie and khaki pants.
Police say he approached two women dining at Hobson's Choice in Hoboken, N.J., around 7:20 p.m. on Thursday. He asked if they needed anything else before paying. They said no and handed him $90 in cash.

About two hours later he approached three women dining at Margherita's Pizza and Cafe. He asked if they were ready to pay, took $96 and never returned with their change.

Saw this on my Local News.

Guess if he can hit like 5 a night, it would be a pretty good Score. @)

I've been to a couple of places where another waiter would take the check because your Waiter is busy with another Table.
If paying by Credit card, Your waiter will bring it back to you to be signed.

But you're right Wil, You have to have a nice Size to try something like this.

Pretty crazy he found 2 tables both paying cash for bills that high. I tend to pay in cash, but none of my friends ever do. If they offered him the credit card, would he just walk away or steal the card?

most places these days have the book with the place ur debit card here slot, so it sticks out the top (so waiters can see ur ready to pay). all he would really have to do is look for someone with their bill, but no debit card hanging out the top.

Guy gets a table...orders a water or something cheap and says he's waiting on others...busy time...

He scans the room for ladies in a group digging in their purses for cash to pay their bill...they stick it in the check holder...waiting on waiter...he sees the waiter doing something else or going in back...

Boom...easy

Its also alot easier than u might think to pull it off if u have the balls to try it. just dress nicely and go up to tables and act like your part of the management. How was your food, how was your service etc. Then you can be like would like for me to take care of your bill. Now from the waiters aspect, they are going to see someone standing on the side of the table having a friendly conversation with the table and assume its friends that have run into each other and give you a few mins. So you wont really get caught unless you double dip the same restaurant and they have u on camera or a different waiter is close by while your talking and over hears your convo with them.
