CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jim Tressel's resignation as Ohio State's football coach is already, naturally, leading to speculation about who the university will hire as his long-term replacement.
It's already started, in fact. The Bodog Sportsbook has placed odds on some of the coaches it anticipates will be Ohio State coaching candidates.
Luke Fickell, a former OSU standout defensive lineman who has been working as a co-defensive coordinator for Tressel, will be the Buckeyes' interim head coach in the upcoming 2011 season.
That assignment gives Fickell himself a chance to become a legitimate candidate to win a multi-year contract as the Ohio State boss. The university says it will conduct a search for the next coach after the season.
The Buckeyes' coaching job figures to be one of the most highly-sought positions in recent college football history, even if the program is levied major penalties by the NCAA for the scandal that prompted Tressel's resignation.
Candidates may include not only those with impressive college resumes, but also coaches who have flourished in the NFL.
