A Missouri police officer was shot and killed by an 18-year-old suspect during an early morning shootout in a small middle-class community on Thursday.
Blake Snyder, 33, has been identified as the slain St Louis County police officer. He leaves behind a wife and a two-year-old son.
Snyder was shot by the suspect, a white male, 'almost immediately' after he arrived on the scene with another officer at 5am.
Snyder was struck point-blank and the wound was immediately fatal, Chief Jon Belmar told KSDK.
The second officer returned fire and injured the teen, who is currently in critical condition. His name has not yet been released.
Authorities said Snyder and the second officer were responding to a disturbance call in Green Park when he was shot.
The suspect is connected to a felony narcotics case that Sydney was involved with, Belmar told CBS St Louis.

Snyder, who Belmar said was a 'great guy' and a dedicated cop, had worked at the St Louis County Police Department for four years.
He is the first officer at the department to be killed in the line of duty in 16 years.
Authorities were still at the scene of the shooting before noon on Thursday, with evidence markers covering the ground.
Belmar said there were no dash cams or body cameras in use at the time of the shooting.

An Alabama teenager is in critical condition after he was assaulted in a store parking lot – and his mother thinks it may have because of his pro-police posts on social media.
Brian Ogle, a 17-year-old student at Sylacauga High School in Sylacauga, Alabama, suffered three skull fractures as well as injuries to his shoulders after he was assaulted near an Ace hardware store after his school's homecoming football game on Friday.
Authorities found Ogle bleeding from his head. He was immediately airlifted to a hospital in nearby Birmingham, the Daily Caller reported.
His mother, Brandi Allen, told WBRC she believes her son was a target because of videos he posted on his Facebook account which expressed support for the Blue Lives Matter movement.

Brian Ogle, 17, is being treated for injuries at a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, after he was assaulted in the parking lot of an Ace hardware store in Sylacauga

Blue Lives Matter is a response to the Black Lives Matter protests which erupted nationwide in the wake of a spate of police-involved killings of African-Americans.
Ogle's Facebook account is replete with images and messages meant to convey support for law enforcement.

'Instead of us planning for his 18th birthday, we're here [near the hospital],' said Allen. 'Why? Because he made a statement that he backs the blue?
'I'm still trying to understand how someone, no matter the color of their skin, can do this to another human being,'

Ogle's mother said that her son began to receive threats from people at school after he made the posts, though school administrators said there was nothing they could do

Local police reportedly interview nearly two dozen witnesses. The authorities hope to begin taking people into custody after receiving the appropriate warrants.
'Apparently he was hit with something that is possibly to be the butt of the pistol,' Allen said. 'He has stitches and he has real bad bruising on his shoulder. There's a lot of wounds on the back of his head from being hit as well.'
She said that her son began receiving threatening messages from schoolmates who were unhappy over his Facebook posts.

Ogle, pictured, reported that he had received some threats before he was eventually attacked

Allen also blamed school officials for not adequately protecting her son after he had notified them of the threats he was receiving.
'My son took it to the principal at Sylacauga High School and I commend him for that. He showed her the threats that were being made to him, but she told him there was nothing she could do. I'm appalled,' Allen explained.
'They have a job to do it at school and they failed to do it,' Allen said.
Allen is eager for police to make progress in the investigation and to find those responsible for assaulting her son.
'I want to see them handcuffed. I want to see them put in jail. I don't wish any harm on anyone's child. I would like for them to have to look at my child right now. I don't want any other mother to have to go through what I went through these past few days,' Allen said.
