Myth #2: That third base player is killing me.
The Reason: The dealer shows a weak 5 upcard and all the players including yourself make the right play and stand on all stiff totals. The third baseman, who is the last player to act before the dealer, ponders whether to hit or stand on 16. He hits, the dealer gives him a picture card, and then the dealer draws a 6 to her 15 for a 21, beating everyone. Oh, how you would like to strangle the third base player. If the dummy would have stood like he was supposed to, the dealer would have gotten the picture card instead and broke and everyone would have won. Don't tell me bad players don't effect whether or not I win or lose.
The Truth: It's absolutely true that dumb plays made by dumb players can effect the outcome of a hand for everyone else. But it has been proven mathematically that it is just as likely that a dumb play could result in the entire table winning. The player in the above example could have just as easily gotten the 6, leaving the picture card for the dealer to bust. While dumb plays can upset smart players, it has no mathematical long term effect on a player's expected outcome. You always curse the stupid player that caused you to lose, but do you ever congratulate him when his stupid play causes you to win? If the terrible play of others effects you emotionally so that you start to make playing mistakes, then my advise is to leave the table and play elsewhere.

Blackjack Myth #5: Bad players can affect your game
While nothing would be better than to blame other players for getting a bad hand in blackjack, realistically it will not affect your long term play. Yes, a bad play by another player can alter a couple of possible hands but only in the short term. One of the basic rules of being successful at blackjack is to think long term.

Yep.

If someone playing "stupid" at third base increased the house advantage, then casinos would hire someone to sit at third base and play stupid. Besides, blackjack isn't a team game. And like others have said on here, if you don't like the way someone is playing, get up and leave. There are probably dozens of other open tables you can pick from.

I remember coming home a couple years ago over Thanksgiving weekend. I had a long layover in Vegas, so instead of sitting around the airport, I hit the MGM for a few hours of blackjack. At one point, I sat down just as the dealer shuffled a new shoe. Some guy at first base made a terrible decision on the very first hand that resulted in the entire table losing, and everyone (except me) cursed him for it. He looked pretty young and flustered, and he got up and left after that one hand. However, after that, the whole table went un an unbelievable run for the rest of the shoe. I must have won something like 15 straight hands...got lots of blackjacks and double downs and ended up with a huge stack of chips, and the dealer was busting almost non-stop. And none of it would have happened if the original guy at first base didn't play "dumb" on the first hand. It can work for you or against you.

I don't understand why people bitch about splitting 10's vs. a 5 or 6 dealer card. If you had a ten count against a dealer 5 or 6, and doubled down, no one would say a word. Now here's two chances to double down against a 5 or 6 giving you twice the chance. What's the problem?

It's not just what you're getting but what you're giving up. If you split 10's you're giving up a guaranteed 20, which has a very high chance of winning. This is why you always split 8's (unless it's vs. a dealer 10 and the count is +5 or greater); you're giving up a 16, which is as bad as it gets.
