another thread about this also...

Very sad situation, in that so much of their existence is social, and that is what captivity takes from them. I can't imagine my dog, or cat, living in a space roughly 1.5x their body lengths (which is what some whales, particularly one in Miami, are faced with).

Also, a quick read on dorsal-fin collapse is reason alone - Seaworld would have people believe that it's not a sign of anything, yet 100% of male whales in captivity experience it.

Didn't Penn and Teller do a bull shit on this? Lots of exaggerated facts, and some straight lies in the blackfish doc if I remember right.

Still not sure why this documentary was considered so ground breaking. An animal confined in a tiny space doesn't like it? Of course not. The same can be said for every other animal at the zoo (lion, tiger, elephant, giraffe, etc...).

Unless we're advocating getting rid of zoos, I don't see how we remedy this. What makes an orca different from an elephant? There are thousands of elephants held captive in zoos and no one has a problem with it. But because a documentary was made on orcas, we shouldn't hold them captive. Again, I don't disagree with that. Just wondering why there's a distinction.

Actually a lot of people have a problem with that

So what's the solution? Free all elephants and orcas? What about tigers? Them too? Lions? Pretty soon and the zoos will empty. Are we really advocating no zoos? What about aquariums? Are people allowed to have fish tanks in their homes? Should we quit eating bacon while we're at it? Doubt pigs like being confined in a pen until they're slaughtered.

+1. I love seeing animals but Id rather have all zoos demolished. Travel to Africa sometime and watch them furry things in their own environment, free.

Unfortunately elephants and rhinos are being hunted to near extinction in Africa.

Looks like that's exactly what they are doing, expanding the Rollercoaster and water rides

They announced 2016 will be the last year of orca shows. Hopefully they release the whales back into the wild.
