NFL- Castaways: Culpepper, Brooks and Leftwich Don't Get The Calls

ATTENTION NFL GM's: If you can recycle all the Brunells and Testerverdes in the NFL, why not give Culpepper, Aaron Brooks and Byron Leftwich a chance? At least as a backup!
by Kyle T. Mosley

July 23, 2008:
Question: How does Aaron Brooks, Daunte Culpepper and Byron Leftwich gohttp://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/players/Daunte_Culpepper/1645 without an NFL QB job when the league has a Brodie Croyle (Kansas City), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay), or an Alex Smith in San Francisco with QB jobs?
None of these guys, with the exception of Smith, has fared well in the NFL - Especially Brady Croyle!
Let's face facts, Aaron's Leadership qualities (lack of) and outspokenness were his downfalls. Culpper's injury and Sex Boat scandal has been his legacy. And, poor Byron Leftwich is too injury prone. However, if you can recycle Brunell and Testerverde, why not give these "once productive" NFL QB's a chance? Heck, even David Carr is a backup! At least give them a chance as a backup! Each of these QB's have thrown over 20 Touchdowns in multiple seasons. Culpepper is arguably the best of this group.

What's really behind the "blackballing"? Is it because they are "Black" and the NFL GM's can't figure them into the programs? Or, can't they figure out how they can "Ball"?

Here's excerpts from the NOLA.com's article echoing my sentiments:

Aaron Brooks keeps a low profile these days. He spends his mornings working out, fine-tuning his physique, perfecting his three- and five-step drops, sharpening his rifle-like right arm. He's aware it might be all for naught.

"Blackballed might be too strong a word, " said ESPN analyst Shaun King, a former Tulane and NFL quarterback. "But if you really are objective, the facts point to it must be something. It's outside of normal when you look at the way that some of the quarterbacks are recycled. If you look at the rosters right now - and I don't want to call specific guys' names, but if you look at the rosters in the National Football League and then you ask yourself based on accomplishment alone a- how is an Aaron Brooks or a Daunte Culpepper or a Byron Leftwich or a Shaun King, for that matter, not somewhere?"

Maybe it has something to do with this:

and the fact they are something like 12-36 over the above seasons. Don't want to let facts get in the way of a sexy argument. These guys suck, plain and simple. That's why they don't have jobs. Tarvaris f*ing Jackson is a starting QB in the league. Cleo Lemon started 7 games last year.

Their use of Smith, Rodgers and Croyle is wholly inappropriate to prove the point they are trying to make. Rodgers hasn't even played and all three guys are still young with their teams figuring out if they can play. They are in the same positions that Leftwich and Brooks were at the beginnings of their careers, where they got plenty of opportunities to prove themselves (and generally failed or started sucking after playing well for a while). If someone wants to make this argument (and it may actually be true), at least find good examples on both sides of the argument (black QBs who are decent and not getting a shot and white stiffs who have proven they stink but continue getting jobs).

Stupid story--two of the qb's mentioned (culpepper/brooks) have never shown that they can read defenses or take care of the football. The third is out of work b/c he can't move (wooden indian), hence can not stay out of harms way, not too mention he has the touch of a bull in a china shop. Drew Bledsoe is also out of work, for many of the same reasons as these guys.....All three were given opportunities to start and all three played themselves out of a job.

They're still scrapin him off my stucco.

These three guys have all been given opportunities. They just suck. Daunte never did recover from not having Moss to throw to anymore.

Thank goodness David Garrard is black, or last year it would have been a circus in Jacksonville.

Anyone who thinks that any of these three guys could make winners out of SF and KC this year are morons.

Did McNabb help with this story? Holy shit, enough with the black QB's don't get respect story. All those QB's just plain suck.

I'm not at all saying something stupid like BTJ (surprise, surprise) because there are a lot of very good black QB's and there will only be more as time goes on, but these three black QB's are all terrible and still think they're starters.

theres only 3 or 4 good quarterbacks in the entire league. the game is won with the run game primarily. all a QB has to do is hand it off

You don't watch much football do you?

That's like saying a point guard, all he has to do is pass the ball.

I'm going to take a shot....ummm Kyle Mosely is black?

They've all been given shots, Culpepper, Brooks and Leftwich. Culpepper numerous teams, he sucked, Brooks with the Raiders...sucked and Leftwich last year in a Falcons uniform was pathetic. How bad was he? Fucking Petrino sat his ass down in favor of Joey Harrington!!

Idiot. Go watch football. He has been top 5 this decade for sure. With only tom brady and Manning being better than him. And they have had so much more to work with. Please explain this idiotic comment.

I think the guy use the worst examples to write this article. I agree with all of you. These three guys suck but in there mind think they can be starters. Nobody wants that kind of headache. Also the black quarterback so called experiment. You are an idiot for even saying some crap like this.

Maybe he should write a story on how Aaron Brooks is trying to rebuild his community and give something back now that he is retired. He's doing lots of good things in the community he grew up in, the same community Michael Vick grew up in, but then I guess that story wouldn't sell copy would it?

Here's part of that same article that was "conveniently" cut out:

that has taken him from the poverty-stricken streets of Newport News to living in upscale neighborhoods and cashing big checks.
When Brooks talks, he almost sounds content.
He is proud of his work on the football field and in the community, where his Aaron Brooks Family Foundation has pushed for literacy and raised money for books in the inner city.
"Hopefully I get that call, but I won't let this situation control who I am," he said. "Football doesn't define me. It is just a part of my life."
The other part of Brooks' life involves time as a developer in Virginia. He said there are plans in store for him and some partners to redevelop part of downtown Newport News.
