If anyone hears about a french door stainless fridge for under $850 let me know. Cheapest I have seen so far is $998 and thats the same price they regularly have at lowes or home depot. Hoping to snag a nice fridge on black friday for a good deal.

I agree 100%, a few years ago I went out driving about 10pm around the mall to see all the barricades set up and people that were lined up all Thanksgiving day to buy some items. Ill pay the extra $20 and enjoy the day with my family.

Actually, some folks who work over the holidays are desperate for the hours and pay and do it voluntarily.

Not all of them though. Seems as though (through interviews and people I know who are forced to work it), that the majority of workers would rather have the day to spend with their families.

so what? find another job. the reason why stores open the doors on thanksgiving is because the demand is there. basic free market principles.

Kinda works both ways. I know people who LOVE these sales b/c they can buy higher ticket items and a nicely discounted price that they normally cannot afford (or dont wanna pay full price for). The employee knows that its the worst day to work but many retailers hire for xmas help and those in the retail industry know that this is the "busy" time.

If u worked on commission, wouldnt you LOVE to work during these crazy days?

Well dont forget that the largest percentage of sales in retail is done at this time of the year, it basically makes or break a company. So, how can you blame them for going all in as much as possible, also remember , times are changing rapidly. Alot of people are going ONLINE, places like amazon has really cut into their sales, dont think the internet and technology is taking over, go ask the head of stamps at USPS

Been on both ends. Worked some retail and didn't exactly enjoy the long hours and angry mobs of people but the extra holiday cash was nice. Also been out at 1 AM for the in store deals and got a $7000 TV for under $3.5K so felt it was worth it. Probably won't ever go out again for Black Friday overnight, but once was a nice life experience.

It's part of our consumer culture now, if the demand was gone we would not see it. But savvy shoppers want deals and stores are happy to accommodate them. I don't really mind the consumerism of Thanksgiving, the holiday has been this way for a long, long time and it originated as a celebration of harvest and good fortune, so what's the difference if now we eat to excess and spend hard-earned money?

Most of the people who are working the late, late hours of thanksgiving and overnight have volunteered to do it because they enjoy early dinner with family and friends and then go get paid time and a half.

It's the way that we so overly monetized Christmas that really depresses me...
