With the New England Patriots’ 2023 NFL season winding down, and the team already eliminated from the playoffs, there are two big questions facing their future. One has to do with the quarterback position, as Mac Jones — the team’s first round pick in 2021 — as been benched in favor of Bailey Zappe.
The other? The status of Bill Belichick.
One of the game’s greatest coaches and defensive minds, Belichick has delivered six Super Bowl titles to Foxborough. But with the team sitting at 3-10, and having missed out on the playoffs now in a second-straight season, Belichick’s future with the organization was growing cloudier by the day.
Now, according to at least one report, the team and the coach are set to part ways at the end of the season. According to Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston, the decision was made by owner Robert Kraft after an embarrassing loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany, a loss that highlighted subpar play at the quarterback position.

I don't think Belichick will walk away after a season like this.

I don't think Kraft will fire Belichick

So I'll wait for words from one of the two men above before believing the beat writer.

I suppose the story may be true, it's plausible, but it's not official

At age 72, maybe Bill is tired. Maybe Bill can't deal with today's athletes. Maybe Kraft doesn't like the direction of the team. Maybe Kraft's kids have his ear. Or maybe the story is an embellishment.

I know this, neither Belichick nor Kraft gave this story to Curran, who I don't like much anyway.

the Glen Sather of the NFL. Check that, Sather far better, he won a Cup without Gretzky . This guy cant even have a +.500 record without Brady let alone win something

he sure did shape that qb he drafted as the next one, no ?.........pick the elite player over any perceived elite coach . Time doiig its tang

Maybe Kraft wanted Jones benched months ago.

Maybe Kraft wants Belichick to give up GM responsibilities

I wanted both of those things too 😀

The first three titles were based on a running game and defense. Brady was a great game manager, and a winner. Part of Belichick's franchise

Brady became an elite passing QB in 2007, the year they went 18-1

The last Super Bowl they won was 13-3 over the Rams. I'm going to suggest that wasn't because of Brady. Sean McVay talked about how badly he was schooled by Belichick

Every player who played in New England talks about his unparalleled game preparation. Except for a couple of malcontents that were simply undeciplined

When the Patriots beat the Falcons, that was all on Tom Brady. Every other SB win had a strong defensive effort.

Brady also helped in another way, he played for far below market value, enabling the Patriots to sign more talented players.

Belichick has 8 rings. Time certainly did it's thing

This is a joke, right? LOL

Great coaches need great players. You can't "teach" great instincts and talent. You can only harness and nurture them. Tom Brady was not even the most athletically gifted. Brady's secret sauce was his dedication and passion for listening, learning and perfecting his craft - always a student of the game.

Phil Jackson needed Jordan for his record 6 rings, and Kobe for another 5 after that.

Mac Jones is fundamentally awful, something Bill Belichick can't "teach" or "fix"

Assuming he doesn't retire, BB needs another stud QB for his next dynasty.

GOATs need other GOATs.

Simple as that.

actually, Sather was a smart dude. When Gretz left he moved to GM. Knew his limitations/stengths

lol...correct in that you cant teach certain things--that's why i was saying a few yrs back you take Tom not Beli. Some were so in love they said they'd take Beli over an elite qb like Mahomes, LOL....remember? not ending well, shocking

GOATs need GOATs.

Mahomes wouldn't be winning shit without Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Imagine if Mahomes had been drafted by the Browns, Cardinals or Falcons.

Guess what? Still no SuperBowl.

You conveniently left that part out.

Remember all the clowns in here saying that Brady was just another "system QB" and all the success of the Pat's was due to Belichick. That take did not age well.

Don't forget, NE played in the worst division in NFL history during their run. That helped plenty

If Gretzky had been drafted by your beloved Leafs, no cups for him either.

Because some organizations just have a knack for ruining talent.

Matthews "highest paid player" in the NHL hovering around #30 in scoring with ONE playoff series victory on his resume. Not to mention, his other diva teammates with similar ridiculous contracts doggin' it year after year. The Leafs completely ruined Matthews.

Had Matthews been drafted into a well-run class organization with coaches who knew how to coach, he'd already be sipping champagne, like his less talented buddy Jack Eichel in Vegas - a team that brings it every shift.

GOATs need GOATs. That is, GOAT players need GOAT coaches and vice-versa.

Because they operate on a different level and need similar minds who think and act they do.

Give Belichick Allen or Mahomes and he'd win another 5 championships, like Phil Jackson did with Kobe.

Yes.

If anything, Brady's accomplishments are more impressive as Bill is the same guy he was in Cleveland.
