BEVERLY HILLS BOOKIE BETTING ON THE STARS
9/14/02 - Sting
I am of the belief that sudden successful expansion of a new company can be achieved in industries that are sorely lacking in terms of the competence of management.
The offshore gaming industry is very weak right now and new blood is desperately needed. Of course, that is providing there are deep pockets that come along with the package. Through the years, individuals without a clue have tossed around the concept of a start-up company tied in to investors with very deep pockets. Remember the Dunes?
Beverly Hills Bookie (at
http://www.beverlyhillsbookie.com) is one such establishment that appears destined for stardom - LITERALLY.
The company enjoys endorsement power from such big name stars as comedian and one time MTV personality Pauly Shore, Playboy playmate Brandy Robert and co-host of Fox television's NFL Under Helmet, Rebecca Grant.
But what's more important is that the company thrives on deep pockets from a combination of outside investors, both foreign and Hollywood-based and long established MVP Sports International - one of the first books to land in Costa Rica.
Now I would be fool-hearty to ignore the fact that many of you are already familiar with the likes of Dalton Wagner's highly regarded MVP sports book and Duane Roberts MVP Bets. Interestingly, all three books operate within a block of one another (in the case of MVP Sports International and MVP Bets, within one floor of one another). The later two companies are a result of partners branching out.
Beverly Hills Scott (as he likes to be called) is a marketing professional who has joined forces with our good friend Luke from MVP Sports International. Together they have forged an alliance that is expected to materialize into something spectacular over the coming months.
I recently had a chance to sit down and discuss Beverly Hills Bookie with both Scott and Luke. Scott is more enthusiastic than anyone else I know in this industry, while Luke is fairly laid back and less animated. The two make a terrific pairing.
STING: Where did you come up with the name Beverly Hills Bookie (
http://www.beverlyhillsbookie.com)?
SCOTT: A friend of mine was sitting around having lunch with Pauly Shore one day and asked what would be a good name to market in Los Angeles. They actually came up with the name. Pauly Shore wants to do a movie on Beverly Hills Bookie and a few million has been put aside for this. We have billboards in LA, San Francisco and Chicago. The host of NFL Under the Helmet, Rebecca Grant, appears in our ad and that same exact ad features Playmate of the Year Brande Roderick. All of them say "Got Bookie". We also have ads in the works with Mark McGrath (from Sugar Ray), Fred Durst and a few others.
STING: There is some confusion though in that Beverly Hills Bookie claims to have over 200 clerks and many years of experience. Yet those of us covering the offshore scene for some time now have not heard of your book. Can you explain this declaration to us?
SCOTT: Although I am not a bookmaker myself, I am a marketer who promotes companies. It just so happens that I am now promoting a partnership with Luke. We are using Luke's facilities and his abilities. This does not change the fact that his office has over 200 clerks. This is where I think a lot of the confusion lies.
LUKE: Sting, I'd also like to make it perfectly clear that MVP Sports International fully backs Beverly Hills Bookie.
STING: Thanks for the clarification. I also want to clarify that while Beverly Hills Bookie may be relatively new, what I look for when a "new" book comes onto the scene is whom they are tied in with. I can understand industry people looking at the name on the Prescription's "Preferred Listing" and asking who these guys are. But in actuality, the company you've been affiliated with, MVP Sports International, has been around longer than most of those listed on the Prescription "Preferred List".
LUKE: This is true Sting. Just to give you some idea, we've been offshore longer than World Sports Exchange.
STING: Scott, so you are from Hollywood?
SCOTT: No. I am actually from Massachusetts.
STING: So how did you get to stumble ac**** all these celebrities?
SCOTT: Well I moved to Hollywood just a little over a year ago. And I have so many friends in that area I guess. Our advertising is a little different than everyone else. I don't have the million-dollar advertising budget. Most of my advertising is through favors. I have a friend who owns a media company that gave us a free billboard worth over $20,000. In addition, everyone is a friend with everyone else in Hollywood so the word gets around and people are willing to do favors. We get into places most other sports books cannot get into.
STING: Scott, you alluded to a movie deal with Pauly Shore. Can you tell us more about this particular project?
SCOTT: The movie deal is very real, with a few million already raised. Pauly Shore wants to act in it. Having guys like Shore attached to the project will get it pushed into being made. Shore has $2 million between him and a few buddies and he would like to co-produce it. Nothing's 100 percent, but it does look like Warner Brothers is going to distribute the movie. The hardest thing about the movie is getting the attached talent. We have Mickey Rourke, who might be interested too. Since we have all the talent already attached, it is very easy to get Warner Brothers to distribute. Probably about a 95 percent chance the movie is going to be made.
STING: Am I to assume that with some of the people you are connected with, Beverly Hills Bookie has some pretty deep pockets?
SCOTT: Many of the folks out there don't have the same kind of financial backing that I have and the vision we have. I want people to definitely understand Beverly Hills Bookie is not some fly-by-night shop.
STING: You've mentioned celebrity involvement of Pauly Shore and Mark McGrath. I can't help but notice every time I turn around there is some new big-name star being mentioned in the same sentence as offshore gambling. Do these people actually bet offshore?
SCOTT: I'm really not at liberty to disclose such personal information about betting habits of those individuals we do business with. I can tell you though that Shore is NOT a gambler. We have players with big money, so confidentiality is what allows us to have the reputation we do out in Los Angeles.
STING: Fair enough. Is McGrath definitely in with the advertising? He is one of the highest profile stars in the music world right now and has quite a following.
SCOTT: McGrath is definitely in.
STING: And Fred Durst from Lymp Bizkit?
SCOTT: Durst had said he would do it, but he is not 100 percent committed. It's the same thing with the guys from Staind. Pauly Shore has said he will be plugging us on tour. To have these big names in LA doing this stuff for you for free should be noted.
STING: It seems somewhat frivolous, but Betonsports had this big party down here in Costa Rica with all these big name celebrities. Yet I feel this was a huge mainstream event that takes the industry to the next level. Beverly Hills Bookie, from what it sounds like, already has that strong affiliation with celebrity endorsers.
SCOTT: This is huge. But there is a very big difference to pay someone to attend events, opposed to people just doing things for you as a favor. I just sent out a mailer to 10,000 people with Pauly Shore's face on it. I did not pay him one cent. He did it for free. It's the same thing with Brande Roderick. She went to NASA's (Betonsports.com's) party and was paid to go. They paid her and her publicist to go. Her involvement with us is because of the relationship we have. The important thing is that I am not paying them. It's all about the image of the company. Also, we are looking to take the company public and the celebrity endorsements go a long way in this respect.
STING: Any other big name celebrities you are involved with?
SCOTT: I got guys like Toby McGuire and Leonardo DiCaprio who might want to do ads. This is not 100 percent yet, but I know these guys and they're friends of friends.
STING: But how does Luke fit into all of this? Is Luke a celebrity and I don't know about it?
SCOTT: Without these guys I would not be doing this. They are the bankroll. These guys are great people, as I am sure you already know. I am not the bookmaker. Luke is a bookmaker. The combination is the best. I think this company is going to just blow up. We are a company that plans on being around and will blow up right in front of everyone.
LUKE: We've been friends with Scott for a long time too.
SCOTT: The oddsmaking end of the business is entirely MVP Sports International, while Beverly Hills Bookie is solely marketing, advertising and customer service.
STING: Luke, in regard to MVP Sports International, many of the readers at the Prescription just assume that because a book is located in the Mall San Pedro that they are someone owned by NASA Betonsports. I have to tell you that I know for a fact that all three books with the MVP name act independently of NASA. Would you care to elaborate on this any further?
LUKE: The extent of our relationship with NASA is that I am friends with "G" (CEO of NASA Betonsports). Outside of that, MVP Sports International only leases space from NASA.
STING: But you do rely on NASA's communication, correct? The last two seasons were a complete disaster for books operating out of the Mall San Pedro during the first weekend of football with the crashing system.
LUKE: Yes. We established a backup, so we didn't have any crashing the first weekend of football. There hasn't been a single problem.
STING: Scott, how did you get involved in the offshore gaming industry?
SCOTT: I've known the guys from Rio and I've known Luke for a few years. I got involved with Rio through Dave at Rio and met him through Mac at CRIS five years ago. I was looking for work and had a few players and was looking for a place to stay out here (in Costa Rica).
STING: What about any bonuses and promos being offered by Beverly Hills Bookie?
SCOTT: There is a 15 percent bonus on new accounts and 10 percent on re-deposits. I am not big on the redeposit bonuses, but we have to do it this way to keep the customers playing. Otherwise, I think we'll just get stuck with a bunch of bonus customers who come in, take the bonus and leave. We offer Western Union, NETeller, 10 percent referral bonuses, 10 and 14 point super teasers, great parlay odds and a free half-point on your favorite team for each sport whenever you bet on that team.
STING: How about your limits and attitude towards sharp players?
SCOTT: We will lower the limits on sharp players if need be. We've never kicked a player out for winning. The book offers $10,000 limits on sides over the phone. We sometimes have guys betting $50,000 and $100,000, but these are players we've known for some time.
STING: How do you want Beverly Hills Bookie to be perceived by the public? What else do you want players to know about your company?
SCOTT: We're looking to portray a positive image. In the LA area, we are heavily involved in charitable events. The Manhattan Beach police even wear our hats with the "Got Bookie" slogan. We're very involved in the community. I want your readers to know that we plan on being in this for the long haul.
