I wrote this article for the homepage and hopefully it will just make people think a little more before acting.

BEWARE OF INTERNET HUSTLERS 09/27/03 - Krackman

Is there any honor among Internet friends?
The latest in a string of Internet hustlers doing their thing by screwing other people out of money goes even deeper than just two Internet friends.

This guy met a poster at the Rx bash in Vegas a few months back, gained his trust and then screwed him out of money. Even when confronted by tons of posters, the scammer gave wild excuses why he wasn't going to pay. He even threatened to run to the 'feds' if his former Internet friend didn't leave him alone.

Unfortunately, I have fallen victim to the same kind of scam twice.

The first time was three years ago when a well- known poster earned my trust by exchanging E-mails with me for more then a year and posting daily on the forums.

We posted in threads that each of us had started quite often and it seemed we agreed on many issues involving sports books. He had a slow moving ‘out’ with a ‘dime’ maximum. While he did not have a big bankroll, he seemed to have his head on straight and was a college student at my father’s alma mater.

I let him use two of my accounts to ‘middle’ some college football games. We made a killing during the first three months, and he acted like he had struck gold. Sure I was happy for myself, but also happy for him because he was making money betting sports for the first time in his life.

All of a sudden, three months into this cash cow, his compulsiveness appears. He calls me and says he blew $9,900 in the two accounts I let him use, but will pay me as soon as he can.

Needless to say, it has been three years and I have not heard a word from him. I just do not understand why he couldn't work off what he owed me. After all, we made much more than the $9,900.

This happened again last spring when another famous poster scammed me for $3,000. This guy had a good reputation both offshore and in the forums, but scammed us all.

People seem to take my kindness for weakness, so I hope I have learned from these two experiences.

This has also happened to many different books in well publicized and documented cases in the past four months on these forums. Posters seem to take shots at the books and do everything from past-post to circumvent the betting limits for the sole purpose of scamming a book.

The posters in these cases found loopholes in the system and used it to their advantage.

Gambling brings out the worst in people and sometimes that is evident when you look at the remarks some of the posters make on the forums. I am not saying all posters are scammers or bad people, just a larger percentage then you might think.

I hope this article can save someone down the line. Just remember, the friend you may think you have made on the gambling forums may be playing you like a fiddle.

Good advice.

Classy to keep the posting handles/person names out.

Krackman-
Classy leaving out the names, but if these guys are current posters, a warning would be nice.

krackman isn't hustler an overstatment ?? i would think it far more likely your friend had no intention of scamming you and either does not have the funds to repay, or is using same as his capital.

same sort of thing has happened with me loaning money to friends across many decades. ( or bankrolled in business type ventures ).

Kman, great read. I have found this to be a rule of thumb, the really nice people , the smoothies, the ones that come across as so kind...are the ones to look out for. It is the rough around the edge, tellit the way it is no matter the abuse they take people that I trust for some reason. I have been burnt by to many interent nice guys, as well. Never been burnt by an "in your face" type yet.

You never loan ANYONE money if you are counting on them to pay it back. That includes people who are your best friends.
Why anyone would loan money to someone they barely know is beyond me.

Krackman...great read, I think its safe to say never loan money to anyone.

greendoberman has a point on a small scale if I loan a friend at work 5$ for lunch im about 80% not going to see that 5$ and I give it knowing that. If she pays me back thats cool but if not I never worry about it....I would never loan money thinking im going to ever see it again

Krackman,

Good job of getting to the heart of a widespread affliction in our industry...

This kind of stuff occurs more often than people realize...

As you know, this has also happened to me as well...

Something else I agree with...

I didn't feel it was right for me to name names. Most of us know who the first case was involving. However, I do think that if an active poster is on the scam against the books or other posters he should be named.

This is something Shrink and Major do have in common they have both fallen prey to these fvckers just like me. Yes, the ones who are nice is the ones to be afraid of.

Not sure which is more powerful, the kindness of a man to give or the kindness of a man to forget/forgive those who have taken advantage of this giving.

As much as Dante & I hear about being to nice, we should be feared throughout the world.

KRACKMAN..........

QUOTE by ENTROPY "isnt hustler an overstatement?"

NO PHUKKING WAY..............

I firmly believe that these stiffs have a AGENDA when it comes to scamming over the iternet.........

these people have no INTENTION OF HONORING DEBTS.......
they pose as the following

1. bookmakers
2. players looking for credit
3. call-centers
4. touts
5. agents

they have scammed offhore shops and locals alike, they have scammed unsuspecting people looking for legitimate services.......

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ANYONE OVER THE INTERNET, UNLESS YOU KNOW THE PERSON FIRSTHAND, HAVE MET HIM, KNOW WHERE HE LIVES ETC.

JUST BECAUSE AN AGENT REFERS HIM............DOESNT MEAN DOO-DOO

Good article and right on the money. Based on real life experiences and "nice people" not being what they seem I have never lent a quarter to anyone on line. Never will. Like Krack I also got approached as far as lending "a couple of bucks" to someone this last trip. A friendly no was sufficient.

The only time I lend money is when I want to get rid of someone. I lent a few bucks to a pain in my ass type at a poker game once as I knew it would get him to avoid me. He had too many DWI's and couldn't drive so was always bumming rides from me, not to mention just an all around asshole. Now not only he doesn't ask me for a ride he carefully avoids every game I go to. That's what I call a return on my money. I'd run the other way before I let him pay me back....
