betting dog races?

i'm going down to Florida for about 10 days starting this saturday.Me and a couple friends are planning on visiting the dog tracks,is there any tips you can pass on to help my chances of winning a little money? I know absolutely nothing about wagering on dogs but when or lose I'm looking forward to the experience

Sometimes it's viewable to the public. Bet small, you have a huge house take against you. I'd avoid a favorite to show, a large win bet will kill long odds on a "dog". Trifectas probably best. Be conservative, it's tough to win at.


Check out jai-alai also. Miami has best players, not sure when season runs, but there are a few others. Dog races bore me, last 30 seconds or so.

you need to check the past results to see where they broke in their prior races, some dogs hate running on the inside, some on the outside. Usually outside is a big disadvantage because I don't think dogs understand the shortest distance around the track is on the inside (great insight huh?) . But even on the inside, depending on where they break, they can get wiped out and have no chance. Sometime you can get good prices on a dog that shows bad previous form but has been in trouble and gets a positive post position switch

Other advice - check the past results to see if inside is playing good, or if favorites are hitting - I'm not sure on dogs, but I know horse race favorites only hit about a third of the time, although in any short period it could be a lot higher or lower. If there is some big promotion at the track and a lot of 'casual fans' are there that could effect the betting also.

As far as crapping on the track, in horses that is a BAD sign - dogs not sure about what good body language for a dog is

Don't bet dogs that often - usually only in Vegas , there is one track called Multnomah (near Portland) that seems to always be the last thing running late at night when I am there.

But yes it is relatively 'easy' to win - just don't be greedy or try for a huge score, unless you are just betting a few dollars on some bombs in a triple or something. I think the pools in Florida are probably bigger than Oregon, but if I was you I would try to check out the track you're headed to and see if you can get an idea of the size of their betting pools and purse money. You don't want to go dumping a big bet into a small pool or bet in against some local sharpies in some big money race.

I am thinking that small priced favs probably hit more in dogs because the pools are smaller so you can't hide the smart money very easily

A couple of small things that have worked well for me over the years. Not enough to retire, obviously, but I've never gotten killed at the dogs.

I pick the dog I think that will come in 1st or 2nd and quineilla wheel them with everyone else (cost: 7x unit) and hope the dog you pick brings in a long shot with him. As long as the dog you pick is not the prohibitive favorite, you should do okay.

Post positions 1, 2, and 8 seem to win more often than most--true at most tracks for whatever reason. Any dog that breaks well on an inside post will probably finish in the money.

I used to compare announced weights with program weights, the thought here being that dogs who have lost weight versus their program weight are "hungrier", as they're all supposed to be in a lockout kennel for 24 hours.

Mostly it's just a crap shoot, but it's a lot of action and little wait between races. Get some sun and have a good time.

Check the pools out. Some are so small you can manipulate the odds at the track and bet into a book that doesnt feed into the pool. (-;

In the late 90's I went to Sarasota for Spring Break for some spring training bases. 2 nights we went to the dog track and it seemed every dog I bet rolled off the track in the 1st or 2nd turn. I lost a fukin dime there in 2 nights. Bad money Management for sure and alot of :drink: .

Long distance bet on the lighter weight dogs.

Shorter distances bet on the heavier dogs as they will often times muscle out the smaller ones.

I hate touts for every sport. But those tip sheets outside the gate aint bad. Those people know the dogs at that track. Need to go when crowded---lots of tourist. Have fun dont expect to win money.

I have played the dogs for many years, and the thing to look for is the drop in class dogs. If you can find a double drop that breaks (especially if he is on the inside) play him. Also look for drop dogs that in their previous races show comments of getting in trouble play them also.

I agree with Black Bart. The quinella wheel is a pretty good bet. Just pick the dog you like, and hope he comes in first or second and hope he comes in with a longshot.

Don't know what track you are going to attend, but Palm Beach is the most predictable for me. At Palm you can usually throw out at least 2 dogs narrowing your chance of winning.
