As Yuvraj Singh smashed his maiden Test century in the first innings of the second India-Pak Test at Lahore yesterday, betting for the match on the Betfair website soared past the $1 million (almost Rs 4.4 crore) mark.

This is the first time such a landmark figure was reached within just four hours of a game beginning. The sheer volume of betting for this match strongly indicates that the punters in this case were largely Indian.

The incredible figures show that the website, established in 1999, may have achieved the unthinkable — that Indian bookies are now punters on Betfair.

While, bookies in India have always controlled the betting industry in Asia, unofficial estimates show that this year Betfair has cornered almost 80 per cent of the betting business from India.

Betfair’s transparent dealings have made it the most trusted betting site today, giving bookies the world over a run for their money by eliminating the traditional bookmaker from the betting scene.

But the concept is not entirely a new one. The pari mutuel system (known as Tote in India) in which horseracing punters bet against one another, has been around for more than a century now.

However, it was Andrew Black and Edward Wray, founders of Sporting Exchange Limited, UK, which owns the trade name Betfair, who gave it a new dimension.

In August 1999, they put up the facility on the Internet, with the help of a speedy, secure software that had taken them around a year to perfect.

Today, Betfair averages a turnover of $25 million every day, and enables users from 130 countries around the globe to place bets on more than 500 sporting events.

The website even has the nod of the International Cricket Council (ICC). To weed out match-fixing and corruption from the gentleman’s game, the ICC, in January this year, joined hands with Betfair by signing an agreement with the betting exchange.

Under this agreement, the ICC’s anti-corruption and security unit can solicit information from Betfair to identify individuals suspected of corruption or match-fixing.

According to Betfair spokesman, Mark Davies, “The agreement is the best way to ensure that the sport is kept free of crime. Betfair has no vested interest in the outcome of any event and our interests are absolutely in line with those who run the events. This is good news for the integrity of sport.”

Bookies v/s Betfair

Traditional bookie Betfair A punter places a bet. The bookie accepts a bet. At Betfair, the punter can either place a bet or, like a bookie, accept a bet from another punter.

The punter’s money is matched against the bookie’s money. The punter’s money is matched against another punter’s money who takes the opposite view about the result.

Bookie dictates the odds — the punter can either “take it or leave it”. The punter can decide against what odds he wants to bet or accept a bet. Legal bookies charge tax between 15-20 per cent of the bet size. Betfair charges only 2-5 per cent commission — and only on winning bets.

It amazes me how most offshore books don't try to get a piece of the lucrative cricket market.

Most of them don't even carry lines and when they do it's only for a major tournament like the world cup.

They are missing out.

Pretty much the only sports where Betfair offers poor to no value are the US Sports. With US customers banned from Betfair there may be a possible niche in the market.

However the advantages an exchange would bring to punters for US sports is vastly reduced due to the low vig already available on US sports. Combined with bonus promotions the better alternative is still the offshore industry IMO.

Exchanges have done well for punters who were being ripped off by high vig charged by bookies on the sports that they bet. For US sports however the punters already get a good deal IMO.

Yes, cricket needs to be offered by more offshore books.

By just offering the sport, they could draw customers to their book that would otherwise never play with them.

Offering cricket would be more lucrative to them then some bonus offers the offer.

I am confused???

Why would books catering to the US market want to offer cricket??

They would have no expertise in the sport, may need a special linesmaker and would have no current customers who would bet the sport.

If they wanted to target bettors on the asian sub-continent (where betting is often against their religion) that would be one thing but offering cricket to a US market would only be of interest to scalpers who would look for off or stale lines due to lack of knowledge/time difference.

Real Madrid was ousted from the European Champions Cup with a 3-1 loss to AS Monaco in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, and Arsenal was eliminated with a 2-1 loss to London rival Chelsea.

Monaco overcame a 4-2 deficit from the first leg of the home-and-home, total goals series on March 24, tying the aggregate score and advancing to a semifinal matchup with Chelsea because it scored more away goals.
"This is exceptional," Monaco coach Didier Deschamps said.
Real Madrid, a nine-time European champion, was favored to win the cup this year, especially after adding English midfielder David Beckham to a team nicknamed "Los Galacticos" because of its many stars.
"It's very bad." Madrid's Zinedine Zidane said. "That's the way things are. What can I say? We'll have to look at it more calmly later."
Raul Gonzalez put Real Madrid ahead in the 36th minute at Monaco, but Fernando Guily tied it in the 36th minute and Fernando Morientes, who is on loan from Madrid, put the visitors ahead in the 48th. Giuly scored the decisive goal of the series in the 66th minute.
In London, Jose Antonio Reyes scored for Arsenal in the 45th minute, but Frank Lampard tied the score in the 51st and Wayne Bridge got the go-ahead goal in the 87th to give Chelsea a 3-2 aggregate win.
Arsenal, which is unbeaten in 30 English Premier League games and holds a four-point lead over second-place Chelsea, was coming off a 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup semifinals Saturday.

"When you are such a long unbeaten run as we are, when you lose the first game you know by experience that you are in trouble for the next one," Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger said. "Once you hit the wall you take some time to recover."
On Wednesday, defending champion AC Milan takes a 4-1 lead into its second leg at Deportivo de La Coruna and FC Porto goes into its game at Lyon with a 2-0 advantage.
The Champions Cup final is scheduled for May 26 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

hi guys,
I think it is a good idea.....one should not worry about finding linesmen ...believe you me they can be found. And also, remember there are many non US gamblers, so there is great benefit for OFFSHORE books.

My only concern is if we have the PATIENCE. A game can last for days...with long tea breaks.etc in between the game
icon_rolleyes.gif
......

It can be a long painful wait for the outcome of the game if you have bet on.

You can offer cricket and still market to the U.S. Millions of cricket fans from India, Pakistan and the Caribbean live in North America.

Sweetie, a tea break only last 15 minutes and lunch break 45.

It can go on as along as 5 days but it must be something to the game for it to attract over a billion people worldwide including me.

BTW, it's my favourite sport.

Jip,

You make me want to throw up seeing that post. Australia lost to India last year.

The West Indies teams of the late 70's, 80's and early 90's never lost a test series.

That's the closest a team has come to been undefeated.

hi thruthteller....thanks for acknowledging me
bowdown.gif
..lol

I am in total agreement with you,in addition, there are many peolpe from the countries you mentioned who would like to have the opportunity to bet cricket and their other favorite sports from a REPUTABLE sports book. How can this market be ignored for so long?

I had the opportunity to live in several countries when I was growing up and lived in the UK and Caribbean for a couple of years ..and yes I played[not very well...well ok very badly] and enjoyed the game and still do.
but you know what ..Cricket will never attract serious US bettors..even more so the ones who play for fun and quick returns[hopefully] on their "investment". I agree, books need to look outside the norm and try to incorporate everyone....
so truthteller...what would a prop bet look like
icon_eek.gif

let's talk BALLS....you have dead balls....no balls...handled balls....wide balls
on the field..you have off side ...on side...leg side
and outs...run out...stumped out..Lbw...
and this is just a start.....rules..rules and more rules to become familiar with....
Tell the truth[pun intended]...yes..test matches can last for 5 days...six hours play intervals each day.......each days play interval is divided into 3 sessions of 2 hours with a 40 minit luch break between the first 2 sessions and a 20 minit TEA BREAK between the last 2 sessions...oh and truth teller ..don't forget the hourly drink breaks...phew.....

Sweetie,

You can have several prop bets. Who will be top scorer in an inning, how many run outs, bowled, caughts etc.

I agree not alot of US bettors would be interested in cricket but there are millions of other people that bet on cricket.

This may sound funny but I find baseball rather boring compared to cricket. Actually, I find most sports boring compared to this great game.

FYI, did you know baseball came from cricket.

...

truthteller, so true ...this seems to be a market just waiting to be exploited...ah..ahem...I mean a market waiting to be explored
icon_biggrin.gif

Do you think there is a reason that we may not know of why more books have not responded to the obvious need? Could it be that they are unaware of the millions of fanatical cricket lovers worldwide?
icon_rolleyes.gif

I am going to take a peep at the suggested sites now.......
